Essential Job Duties:
We are seeking an experienced ergonomics professional to join our team and contribute to the Center's work supporting healthier, safer, and more productive workplaces across North Carolina and beyond. Based on your qualifications and experience, you will be hired either as an Ergonomist or Senior Ergonomist. The role offers the opportunity to provide industry consultation, deliver training, collaborate with professionals and researchers, and contribute to applied research through NC State University's state-of-the-art Ergonomics Laboratories.
As an Ergonomist, you will apply your technical knowledge to help employers and employees address ergonomics challenges across a variety of business and industry environments. You will lead consulting projects, deliver training, develop client relationships, support students, and contribute to applied research through NC State University's state-of-the-art Ergonomics Laboratories. In this role, you will:
- Provide ergonomics consultation to employers and employees across varied business and industry environments.
- Serve as project lead for ergonomics consulting engagements, coordinating internal and external resources with guidance from senior staff as needed.
- Deliver Center training classes aligned with your expertise and the Center's needs.
- Build and expand the Center's membership and client base through meetings, seminars, workshops, and other professional forums.
- Develop client proposals that define project scope, deliverables, and estimated timelines, with guidance from senior staff as needed.
- Create, update, and review training materials to ensure technical accuracy, consistency, and professional quality.
- Manage students assigned to the Ergonomics Services functional area and provide direction related to their work.
- Work effectively in a team-based environment to support Center priorities and initiatives.
- Collaborate with Center professionals, regulatory officials, researchers, and external partners to advance the Center's mission.
- Contribute to the development of applied research projects conducted in NC State University's state-of-the-art Ergonomics Laboratories.
As a Senior Ergonomist, you will provide expert ergonomics consultation to employers and employees across a wide range of business and industry settings. You will lead consulting projects, develop client relationships, contribute to applied research, and help advance the Center's ergonomics services and programs. This role offers the opportunity to apply your technical expertise while collaborating with professionals, researchers, regulatory officials, and industry partners across North Carolina and the United States.
In this role, you will:
- In addition to the core responsibilities of an Ergonomist, the Senior Ergonomist provides advanced expertise and leadership through responsibilities that include:
- Provide technical guidance and leadership to junior consulting staff, as applicable.
- Consult and collaborate with Center professionals, regulatory officials, researchers, and external partners to advance the Center's mission.

Other Work/Responsibilities:
- Position involves approximately 20-40% travel.
- In addition to the core responsibilities of this role, there may be occasional opportunities to take on additional duties. This offers an opportunity to build on your skills, explore new areas, and gain a deeper understanding of the department's operations.
Minimum Experience/Education:
- Ergonomist: Must have a Bachelor's (or equivalent) degree in Engineering or related field, plus 3 years of field experience OR a Master's (or equivalent) degree in Ergonomics or related field plus 1 year of field experience.
- Senior Ergonomist: Must have a Bachelor's (or equivalent) degree in engineering or a related field plus 6 years of field experience OR Master's (or equivalent) degree in ergonomics or related field plus 4 years of field experience.
Required Qualifications:
- All levels should have experience assessing physical work areas using various evaluation techniques (including but not limited to the Revised Strain Index, Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), NIOSH Lifting Equation, and Liberty Mutual Manual Materials Handling Calculator).
- Demonstrated commitment to mentoring and supporting junior and senior ergonomists and other staff.
- Desire to develop and contribute to multifaceted applied research projects.
- Enthusiasm for supporting Center improvement initiatives and advancing organizational goals.
Preferred Qualifications:
- N/A.
Required License or Certification:
- Ergonomist: Must have certification in the science of ergonomics with the designation Associate Ergonomics Professional (AEP) preferred or a specific plan to achieve certification within 6 months of hire.
- Senior Ergonomist: Must have certification in the science of ergonomics with the designation Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE) preferred or a specific plan to achieve full certification within 6 months of hire.
- Valid driver's license required.
