Executive Dean, Faculty of Society and Business at AUT: What Candidates Need to Know

A practical read for senior academic leaders deciding whether to apply.

Nobody applies for an executive dean job by accident.

You're reading this because Auckland University of Technology has advertised for an Executive Dean of the Faculty of Society and Business. The ad is on AUT's careers site and being promoted through AcademicJobs.com, which means the university wants a wide pool, not a quiet internal succession. That makes sense. This is a role where the next three years will be measured in staff retention, student numbers and research income, and getting the appointment wrong costs more than any other hire a faculty makes.

If you're weighing whether to apply, the first question is not whether your CV is long enough. It is whether you're willing to run a large academic unit in Auckland while the wider New Zealand university sector deals with structural funding pressure. This piece walks through the practical side of that decision.

What the role asks for

Executive dean positions sit where academic credibility meets hard management work. The successful applicant will be accountable for the faculty's academic strategy, teaching quality, research performance, budgets, staffing and relationships with industry, government, iwi and local communities. That is not a ceremonial post. It's a line-management role with a profit-and-loss account attached.

AUT uses the executive dean title for its most senior faculty leaders. The person in this job reports into the university's senior leadership structure and works alongside other executive deans to deliver AUT's overall plan. For the Faculty of Society and Business, that means a portfolio spanning business, economics, law and social science programmes. Read the position description carefully for the exact schools and departments in scope before you assume the shape of the job.

AUT brands itself as New Zealand's university of technology, and that positioning shows up in the way it judges executive performance: applied research, industry relevance and graduate employment. If your leadership examples come only from a traditional research-intensive environment, you'll need to show how they translate to a university that sells professional relevance.

One thing stands out about this appointment. AUT has advertised it publicly and is pushing it through specialist academic job channels. That is a signal the search committee wants comparators, not just internal candidates who already know the corridors. You should treat that as permission to apply from outside the institution and outside New Zealand.

Why the timing matters

Auckland's university sector isn't hiring because it has spare money. It's hiring because leadership turnover and restructuring have pushed critical roles to market. New Zealand universities have spent recent years managing softer domestic growth, changing international student flows, government funding that doesn't stretch the way it once did, and rising compliance costs. An executive dean at AUT will walk into those constraints on day one, and the search committee will be listening for evidence that you understand them.

That reality doesn't make the role less attractive. It makes a high degree of financial literacy non-negotiable. If you can read a faculty budget, spot which programmes are cross-subsidising others and make a defensible case for reinvestment, you're already ahead of candidates who talk only about vision. The application is live on AUT's careers portal, and the full position description should be your first read, not your last.

Universities New Zealand, the peak body for the country's eight universities, regularly reports on university funding and the pressure to diversify revenue. The next dean will spend significant time on partnerships and external income, not just internal governance. That's a shift from a generation ago, and it changes what you should highlight in your application.

Read the job description like a work plan

Most candidates read a job description to check whether they match it. That's backwards. Read it as a list of what you'll be held accountable for in your first 18 months. Every line in the person specification is a performance indicator somebody will use to evaluate you after you start.

  • Highlight the three outcomes the role mentions first. Those are the faculty's current pain points.
  • Write down the committees and external bodies you'd need to engage. That tells you where the role's real influence sits.
  • Check who you report to and how the faculty's schools are structured. You need to know whether you're leading heads of school directly or working through a deputy.
  • Find the named contact, the closing date and the expected start date. If any of those are missing, ask before you invest days in an application.

The same role is cross-listed on AcademicJobs.com, which is useful if you want to compare how the role is being described to a wider international audience.

AUT's main website has the university's strategic plan and faculty information, and it's worth thirty minutes to read both before you write your cover letter.

What separates a shortlisted candidate from a finalist

At executive dean level, every longlisted candidate has a credible academic record. The interview is won or lost on specificity, speed, institutional fit and stamina.

Specificity means you can point to a school, programme or partnership you actually changed. Not 'I led change across a faculty.' Say what you closed, opened or grew, and give the number. Speed means you can make decisions when the data is incomplete. University committees are slow; the dean who can move a decision through consultation and land it will stand out. Fit means you understand AUT's identity as a university of technology: professional, applied, connected to Auckland's working economy. Stamina is the part candidates forget. A large faculty has a long tail of unresolved issues, and the first year is an endurance test.

  • Prepare a clear example of a budget you had to defend.
  • Prepare an example of a difficult staffing decision you made and how you communicated it.
  • Bring a view on how business and social science disciplines should collaborate, because this faculty's name says that's the expectation.
  • Bring a one-page outline of how you'd spend the first ninety days, because a concrete plan separates you from candidates who talk in generalities.

Don't just rehearse answers to likely questions. Rehearse the numbers behind the answers. Search committees at this level remember evidence, not eloquence.

How this search fits the New Zealand leadership market

Executive dean searches in New Zealand are less frequent than in Australia or the UK, and the candidate pool is accordingly small. That cuts both ways. It means a strong external application gets noticed quickly. It also means committees often default to known names because they have to convince a board they can attract talent to Auckland.

If you're applying from outside New Zealand, you need to address the local context directly in your cover letter. Mention experience with Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations, working with Māori and Pacific students and communities, building partnerships in a small, connected sector, and working with external accreditation or industry advisory boards. Don't pretend you've done all four if you haven't. But show you've done the reading and know why it matters in a New Zealand university.

Salary, start date and relocation support are negotiable at this level. Ask the search contact early. Universities expect serious candidates to ask about these things, and the way the institution answers is part of your due diligence.

One action to take this week

Don't start with the CV. Start with the questions.

Identify the named contact in the advertisement. Send a short email asking four things: what the faculty's top financial risk is this year, how the new dean will be measured after twelve months, what support exists for external partnership development, and how the faculty handles academic workload allocation. Keep it to four sentences. A serious university will answer. A disorganised one won't, and that answer is itself useful information before you spend a weekend on an executive application.

If you're still deciding whether this is the right step, search current higher education executive roles to see how this appointment sits against other dean and provost jobs. Market context makes you a sharper candidate.
