Executive Director of Development, Central Teams and Campaign Planning

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Seven (7) years of full-time fundraising, sales, or related experience in a higher education institution, a large non-profit, and/or complex healthcare system. Proven record of success in cultivating, soliciting, and closing major level ($100,000+) gifts from individual donors. Management experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). One (1) additional year of full-time fundraising, sales, or related experience in a higher education institution, a large non-profit, and/or complex healthcare system. Experience with pipeline development and prospect research. Experience in developing and/or managing a comprehensive fundraising campaign. Contact management software experience.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Executive Director of Development, Central Teams and Campaign Planning will lead Stony Brook University's fundraising campaign efforts, with responsibility for supporting campaign planning, execution, and evaluation from start to finish. The Executive Director will oversee the Prospect Research and Management and Foundation Relations teams with a focus on overseeing pipeline development to ensure a steady flow of qualified prospects that align with campaign goals. Collaborating closely with the Assistant Vice President for Central Teams, the Executive Director will coordinate cross-functional efforts to support campaign priorities, cultivate relationships with key prospects and donors, and manage fundraising activities for assigned portfolios.

  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects capable of major ($100,000+) gifts. Achieve specific and measurable goals for contacts, portfolio management, proposals presented, and dollars raised. Develop short-term and long-term strategies for prospect cultivation and solicitation. Collaborate with deans, directors, department chairs, the University President (when appropriate), and key faculty and staff to cultivate donors, prospects, and volunteers.
  • Provide strategic leadership for university-wide fundraising campaign planning and execution. Partner with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to shape campaign vision, establish goals, and align fundraising strategies with institutional priorities. Oversee campaign infrastructure, including timelines, donor engagement strategies, and performance tracking. Ensure integration of pipeline insights and prospect data to inform decision-making and drive campaign success from initial planning through post-campaign evaluation.
  • Hire, train, and supervise the Prospect Research and Management team, establish and monitor goals; provide performance feedback and coaching; provide strong leadership to foster growth, development and collaboration. Implement team wide strategies, develop best practices, and integrate new technologies to ensure the success of the individuals as well as the team. Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive pipeline strategy to ensure a steady flow of qualified prospects that support both campaign initiatives and ongoing fundraising priorities.
  • Serve on the Leadership Team for Central Teams and collaborate closely with the Stony Brook University Advancement Team. Lead the development of a robust fundraising program in support of Central Teams fundraising. Collaborate with the AVP and leadership to support ongoing philanthropic priorities for Stony Brook.
  • Engage in peer-to-peer communication and collaboration. Prepare fundraising outreach, updates, and communications on behalf of the director and other leadership to ensure robust donor engagement and community awareness of fundraising needs. Communicate regularly and professionally with colleagues. Attend and participate in regular staff and frontline fundraiser meetings. Serve on various committees as requested by the supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Special Notes:
The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
