The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education, and exhibition.

The Exhibition department is seeking a full-time Exhibit Maintenance Assistant to support Exhibition, Science Conservation and Anthropology collections staff in care efforts related to deinstallation of collections displayed in cultural halls and preparation for long-term storage. This work will be guided by special procedures for culturally sensitive collections.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Remove a wide range of objects from display, assisting conservation staff with separation of objects from previous mounting, including metal mounts and fully dressed mannequins. Disassemble exhibition displays including the breakdown of mannequins and the removal of ground materials and other display items as needed to facilitate deinstallation.
  • Assist the team with rehousing, preparing physical supports in preparation for freezing and long-term storage.
  • Assist the deinstallation team with integrated pest management including bagging and freezing objects.
  • Assist with the transportation of collections to various project locales.

The expected salary range for the Exhibit Maintenance Assistant is $50,000/annual - $55,000/annual. This position is overtime-eligible and the AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.

  • Bachelor's degree in sculpture, conservation, anthropology or another related field.
  • Experience handling anthropology collections.
