Dear Prospective Applicants,

We invite applications for casual academic positions within the Discipline of Social Work and Policy Studies in the Sydney School of Education and Social Work for Semester 1, 2026.

 Key Information Before Applying:

Visa & Workload Limits

  • Student visa holders must comply with their visa’s work-hour restrictions.
  • Australian citizens and permanent residents may not teach more than three Units of Study (UOS).

Pay Rates (Indicative)

  • TU2 Tutorial: $182.54
  • TU4 Repeat Tutorial: $121.69
  • M05 Marking: $60.51/hr
  • A02 Other Academic Activities (including Capstone Supervision): $60.51/hr

Contracts & Training

  • Ongoing Casual Academics with active contracts must still complete the EOI form (no new contract needed).
  • All casual academics must complete all training required by the Faculty and the School.

Teaching Allocations

  • Unit allocations may change due to enrolment fluctuations up to the census date.

Location

  • Staff must remain in Sydney for the duration of the semester, including exams. Remote overseas work is not permitted.

  • High application volume means not all eligible candidates will be selected.

Application Process

Complete the Expression of Interest (EOI) form. Upload the following required documents in PDF format:CV Select up to four preferred units. Unit Coordinators will review EOIs and may contact you for an interview. If appointed, the Coordination Team will finalise your employment, and HR will provide onboarding instructions. Please note: Onboarding may not guarantee an allocation of work. Hours will only be confirmed once the final CASS schedule has been approved and released.

If you have not been contacted by 13 February 2026, it means your application has not been successful at this stage. However, we will keep your details in our hiring pool and may get in touch if enrolments increase or if backup staff are required. Please note that being kept in the pool does not guarantee future work.

Eligibility Requirements

To meet TEQSA requirements, applicants must hold a qualification at least one AQF level higher than the course of study being taught (AQF+1), or demonstrate equivalent academic, professional, or practice-based experience and expertise. Candidates who bring both professional experience and disciplinary knowledge will be highly valued.

Expected Duties

Depending on the role, unit of study, and your qualifications, duties may include:

  • Delivering tutorials
  • Supporting lectures and workshops
  • Marking assessments and contributing to academic administration

Casual academic rates will be commensurate with the duties undertaken, as outlined in the University of Sydney Enterprise Agreement.

About You

We welcome EOIs from individuals who:

  • Hold relevant qualifications or equivalent experience
  • Can provide evidence of high-quality teaching experience aligned with their area(s) of interest
  • Demonstrate ongoing professional and/or academic engagement

Sponsorship / work rights for Australia

You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this employment to apply. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.

Pre-employment checks

Your employment is conditional upon the completion of all roles requiring pre-employment or background checks in terms satisfactory to the University. Similarly, your ongoing employment is conditional upon the satisfactory maintenance of all relevant clearances and background check requirements. If you do not meet these conditions, the University may take any necessary step to ensure they are met and in the absence of this, can terminate your employment.
