Extension Agent, Ag, Livestock and Field Crops (Assistant, Associate, or Full)
Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
This position provides leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of effective educational programs to meet the needs of Lincoln County in the following areas of responsibility: consumer and commercial livestock production, pasture management, animal nutrition, pesticide education, field crop production, and leadership for 4-H and youth livestock programs.
The person in this role will collaborate closely with local growers, agricultural businesses, and pesticide companies to support the growth and sustainability of the county's agricultural sector. The agent will also work in partnership with area Field Crop and Livestock agents, as well as Extension Specialists, to coordinate regional workshops, deliver educational programming, and provide timely information and assistance to producers.
This position serves as a liaison to related commodity groups such as the Cattlemen's Association and the Small Ruminants' Association. The agent will also engage with other agricultural stakeholders to identify needs, develop targeted educational initiatives, and enhance community partnerships.
The agent will collaborate with the 4-H Agent to provide educational support and leadership to livestock, horse, and poultry judging teams. This position offers flexibility to design and deliver educational programs based on the needs of the community and the expertise of the agent.
Programs are designed to enhance profitability, promote sustainable practices, and strengthen the overall economic viability of the agricultural economy of Lincoln County.
Essential Job Duties:
The position may be hired at the Assistant, Associate or Full Agent level if the selected candidate meets the required qualifications.
The County Extension Agent is an employee of North Carolina State University. The County Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of county Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The person in this position must possess a high degree of animal science, livestock production, and general agriculture subject matter competence. They should be familiar with field crop production and possess excellent problem-solving, public speaking, verbal and written communication, and teaching skills for both in person and virtual educational programs. The candidate must also be computer literate and have the necessary education and experience to lead a strong Extension education program in the assigned areas.
The Agent will provide leadership in planning, implementing, evaluating, and promoting educational programs with measurable impacts in livestock and field crop production. They are expected to have knowledge of alternative farm enterprises, business management, and pesticide education. Working collaboratively with staff, producers, university specialists, and advisory members, the agent will identify gaps between current and desired outcomes and prioritize educational programs that meet the needs of Lincoln County farmers.
This position requires a person who can relate to the needs of our clientele, is adept at conducting on farm visits to engage targeted audiences, and can increase program capacity by generating community resources and building partnerships. The Agent's programs should address both current and emerging issues in agricultural production, natural resource management, and challenges such as business management, alternative enterprises, and water quality. The candidate must develop innovative strategies for delivering educational content to farmers, youth, farm families, and relevant organizations and businesses.
This individual must be self-directed and capable of managing multiple responsibilities and schedules while demonstrating strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. They should be comfortable working with varied audiences and be open to exploring grant writing and project management opportunities. The position requires the ability to lift 50 lbs.
Departmental Required Skills:
A Bachelor's degree in an agricultural or related field.
Some travel within the district and state is required. Travel will be reimbursed following state guidelines.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Knowledge and experience in communications, presentation, public relations/marketing, leadership, time management, organization, technology, networking, and resource development are also preferred.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications:
Valid Driver's License and reliable, personal transportation required. Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
