Position Summary
Provides classroom instruction and practical shop floor training in major welding processes, fabrication, blueprint reading, and metallurgical testing. Prepares students for entry-level and advanced welding certifications meeting American Welding Society (AWS) standards.
Essential Duties/Major Accountabilities:
- Instruct students in SMAW (Stick), GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), and FCAW (Flux-Cored) welding processes on various metal types (steel, stainless, aluminum).
- Teach thermal cutting processes (plasma, oxy-fuel), print reading, weld symbols, joint layout, and weld inspection methods.
- Conduct weld destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) to evaluate student work against AWS code criteria.
- Enforce MI-OSHA safety standards, eye/skin protection rules, ventilation usage, and hot-work safety procedures in the welding booth/lab.
- Manage booth materials, gas cylinders, welding machines, and consumable inventories.
Minimum Requirements
- Professional Credentials: AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or AWS Certified Welding Educator (CWE) preferred; or documented AWS welder certifications in structural/pipe processes.
- Education: Associate Degree in Welding Technology, Fabrication, or Industrial Technology (or equivalent combination of formal apprenticeship and documented industry experience).
- Work Experience: Minimum of 5 years of professional industrial welding, structural fabrication, or pipe welding experience.
- Thorough knowledge of AWS codes (e.g., D1.1), blueprint reading, metallurgy, and equipment setup.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
- Active AWS CWI certification.
- Experience with automated or robotic welding systems.
- Previous instructional experience at a community college or vocational trade school.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods, crouch, kneel, and manipulate heavy welding torches and materials.
- Manual dexterity to perform precise torch control.
- Ability to lift structural steel shapes and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
Work Schedule
Varies based on course assignments and departmental need; may include day, evening, or weekend lecture and lab sessions

Unique Aspects of Job:
- Exposure to high heat, bright ultraviolet light arc rays, sparks, fumes, and noisy industrial shop environments requiring full personal protective equipment (PPE).
Examples of Work Assignments:
- Demonstrating multi-pass pipe welding in the 6G position using GTAW and SMAW.
- Conducting bend tests on student coupon specimens in accordance with AWS standards.
- Maintaining shop grinding stations, ventilation hoods, and shielding gas manifold lines.
