The Fire Alarm Technician performs skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and testing of fire alarm and fire protection systems to ensure safe, compliant, and reliable facility operations. This role independently evaluates system conditions, plans and executes repairs, and supports both short–range and more complex projects requiring coordination with contractors and campus partners. The technician provides technical expertise in system functionality, communicates effectively with customers and supervisors, and ensures timely restoration of proper facility conditions. Strong judgment, problem–solving skills, and the ability to manage priorities in a dynamic environment are essential for success in this position.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Tests, troubleshoots, installs, repairs, and maintains various Fire Control Systems (Johnson Controls, Siemens, Notifier, etc.) in compliance with all fire protection codes.
  • Plans and completes repairs on sprinkler, fire protection systems, and controls for short-range projects.
  • Estimates labor time, requisitions materials needed, and requests other maintenance staff assistance for long-range projects.
  • Prioritizes work and makes initial assessment of conditions and service needs.
  • Performs fire pump testing (knowledge of how to perform testing).
  • Drains and fills wet sprinkler systems.
  • Monitors outside service schedules and equipment installation by outside contractors.
  • Monitors internal service schedules/coordinates any interruptions in service (utility outages), maintaining strong communication with customers.
  • Follows through on work in progress to verify proper facility conditions are restored.
  • Keeps Building Services supervisors aware of facility conditions, problems, and needs.
  • Maintains effective communication with other Facility Maintenance Coordinators and other maintenance staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
