Essential Job Functions
This positions main charge is to maintain existing structures on Appalachian State University campus as well as the satellite locations. From time to time this position does get involved in relatively small scale new construction projects. Duties include but are not limited to:
- preparing to pour concrete by forming, walls, sidewalks, catch basins, steps, curb and guttering.
- repairing catch basins and storm drains, repairing them using pvc pipe, pre cast forms, and road tiles
- repair rock walls, installs footers, erects rock walls, constructs pre cast block walls, and installs brick and stone pavers, Flexi-Pave, and Versa-Loc
- Small street repair is also part of this position to include repairing potholes and small scale paving projects
- Snow removal by all means possible is also a responsibility of this position
This position requires the employee to use multiple trades daily to preform daily task; such as, (carpentry, machine operation, landscaping, and grading). Also performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
- Must have excellent verbal and written skills, able to read blue prints, operate large equipment such as: excavators, dump trucks, bucket trucks, and skid-steers.
- Be proficient in the carpentry trade since all concrete forms are fabricated by ASU Masons.
- Knowledge of the use of the internet, email, and Microsoft software are required.
- Must be able to work in awkward positions for extended periods; able to bend, stoop, climb, lift 50+ pounds repetitively, in essence be relatively physically fit.
- This position also works in changing climatic situations; therefore, this employee must be able to adapt to changing weather.
- Ability to operate university owned vehicles with a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
Employee to have the ability to read blueprints, a transit, and extensive knowledge in all aspects of masonry to include but not limited to: Versa-Loc, brick pavers, Flexi-Pave, stone masonry, block, brick walls, and pouring concrete. An Appalachian mason must have a thorough knowledge of mixing masonry bonding agents, a proficiency in running heavy equipment. An Appalachian mason must also be proficient in carpentry fabrications. Have a concrete base in the ability to use personal computers including: the internet, email, Microsoft Software and Adobe. ICPI Concrete Paver Certificate and the Versa-Loc Installers Certificate preferred.
Work Schedule/Hours: 6:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. Monday through Fridaywith the possibility of schedule changes based on departmental need. This position is subject to call back at any time: day, night, weekends, and holidays due to weather events or other emergencies.This position is considered MANDATORY and is expected to work during University closures, emergencies and adverse weather conditions.
Anticipated Hiring Range: $39,951 - $41,535
