Position Summary:

Under close supervision, perform agricultural tasks in and around research plots in fields, greenhouses, and range land.

This position is a per diem appointment that is 80% variable.

Pay Scale:

$21.05/hour to $21.80/hour

Key Responsibilities:

90%

Hand weed, hand thin, hoe, prune, hand harvest and/or compost, irrigate, plant. Lift and move irrigation pipe within fields. Assist with data collection for research projects. Perform other basic tasks associated with a research farm. May operate simple equipment as related to agricultural operations such as, but not limited to, light trucks, light or medium size tractors, irrigation pumps, valve openers, trailers, etc.

Clean ditches, mow lawns, trim hedges, sweep sidewalks, clean buildings, move furniture. General assistance with set up for events.

Requirements:

  • Ability to operate non-powered hand tools.
  • Independently distinguish weeds from plants.
  • Follow precise oral and written directions.
  • Comply with work schedules and follow customary absence and attendance reporting procedures.
  • Report any unusual agricultural or non-agricultural activities, growths, damage, or destruction to the supervisor immediately.
  • Learn and follow the University standard safety rules and practices, as instructed by the supervisor and lead staff members and as provided in handouts or other instructional materials.
  • Ability to perform physical demands including, but not limited to, moving and lifting crop material of up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders, bending and stooping for crop planting and harvest, standing for prolonged periods, traverse uneven terrain.
  • Travel to off-site locations to perform farming operations or other research activities.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
  • The University reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check. This is a designated position requiring a background check and may require fingerprinting due to the nature of the job responsibilities. UC ANR does hire people with conviction histories and reviews information received in the context of the job responsibilities.
