#FH-1841, Director of Kidney Disease & Hypertension, Associate Professor or Professor of Medicine

The Director of the Division of Kidney Disease and Hypertension (DKDH) at Brown will oversee a diverse and dynamic group of clinicians, educators, and researchers. The DKDH has a track record of growth and success in the tripartite mission of academic medicine and is a model of intra-departmental collaboration (ex. Division of Infectious Diseases) and inter-departmental collaboration (ex. Departments of Surgery, Pediatrics). The Division Director will bring vision and initiative to ensure the ongoing success of this work, which ultimately leads to the outstanding healthcare for all people of Rhode Island, including those individuals who are underserved in our community.

I ADMINISTRATION (40-50%)

The Division Director will have overall responsibility for the academic, institutional, and clinical activities of the Division of Kidney Disease and Hypertension, Department of Medicine, Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital and Newport Hospital. The Division Director will also oversee faculty clinical activities at other Brown-affiliated hospitals (Kent Hospital, Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, and Providence Veterans Administration Medical Center).

He/she will report directly to the Chair of the Department of Medicine. Included in this role will be:

• Service as the identified leader and spokesperson for the Division of Kidney Disease and Hypertension.
• Responsibility for the clinical and academic productivity of the Division.
• Responsible and judicious management of resources of the Division.
• Organization and coordination of the in-patient and ambulatory clinical activities including facilities, staff, and physicians.
• Responsibility for the educational and teaching objectives of the Division as related to relevant undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate activities
• Collaboration with Departments of Surgery, Diagnostic Imaging and Pathology, Microbiology and Laboratory Medicine (e.g., Transplant Program, Renal Biopsy)
• Responsibility for the strategic development and management of new as well as existing clinical, research and community initiatives.
• Responsibility for the fiscal activities for the Division.
• Service on selected Hospital and University committees.
• Oversight of institutional services related to nephrology such as Transplant Care.
• Service on national editorial boards, study sections, federal and foundation panels, and national organizations related to kidney diseases

II. RESEARCH (20-30%)

• A commitment to scholarly participation in research programs at Brown.
• The Division Director will develop and maintain a productive research effort within the Division of Kidney Disease and Hypertension.
• The Director will also be responsible for the overall research productivity of the Division, in particular, supporting current efforts and promoting initiatives in underdeveloped areas.
• The Division Director will have an established record of excellence in scientific, peer-reviewed publications and the ability to compete successfully for external research funding.
• This estimated percent effort includes protected time in scholarly development, research, and academic productivity.

III. CLINICAL CARE (10-20%)

The Division Director will be identified as an individual with excellent clinical skills and will participate in the in-patient services and ambulatory practice of the Division.

IV. TEACHING (10-20%)

The Division Director will have overall responsibility for the Division’s teaching and training programs.

• The Director will have direct teaching interaction with fellows, medical house officers and medical students in the form of rounds, seminars, conferences, or journal clubs.

Qualifications:

• M.D. or D.O. degree from an LCME or equivalent-accredited medical school.
• Rank of Associate Professor or Professor of Medicine in their current institution.
• Board certified in Nephrology.
• Maintain a role and/or engage in work of a national/international impact in scholarly activity, teaching or research in Nephrology.
• Demonstrate a strong clinical background in the practice of Nephrology.
• Demonstrate excellence in patient care and teaching.
• Experience in management and administration at a major medical institution.
