Description of Job Duties and Responsibilities
Fairmont State University is seeking a dedicated and
student-focused Financial Aid Counselor to join our team and help
students navigate the financial aid process from application
through enrollment. This position provides individualized guidance
to students and families regarding federal, state, and
institutional financial aid programs, eligibility requirements, and
available resources. The Financial Aid Counselor serves as a
knowledgeable and approachable resource, helping students
understand their financial aid options and supporting them in
making informed decisions about financing their education. Working
collaboratively with students, families, campus partners, and
external agencies, this position plays an important role in
advancing student access, persistence, and success at Fairmont
State University.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide assistance with the completion of the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid ( FAFSA ) and other requirements needed for
the application, acceptance, and disbursement of financial
aid.
Provide counseling to students and parents in person, email
form, and over the phone regarding financial aid eligibility, the
application process, awarding and disbursement, and other financial
aid areas based on federal, state, and institutional policy.
Assist with outgoing mailings, award letters, tracking letters,
and other types of correspondence critical to the operation of the
financial aid office.
Award multiple types of financial aid to students and student
athletes.
Identify and resolve over award conflicts.
Work with student and parent loans.
Advise students in regards to degree pursuant coursework as it
pertains to aid eligibility.
Verify students financial aid eligibility for federal, state,
and institutional programs.
Speak with students interested in student employment and work
study programs.
Assist students regarding Satisfactory Academic Progress.
Assist students and staff with Scholarship and Grant
programs.
Employ professional judgement, as authorized by the Department
of Education, to make changes to FAFSA data elements to ensure
eligibility is based on a student’s current family financial
situation.
Monitor FAFSA data to ensure discrepancies are resolved
according to federal regulations.
Continually monitor the ever-changing rules, regulations,
policy bulletins, and statues from federal and state agencies.
Represent the University at FAFSA workshops, Campus Visitation
Days, New Student Orientation, etc.
Participate in Recruiting Events/ FAFSA /Financial Aid Outreach
Programs/and Financial Aid Literacy events that may require
occasional evenings or weekends.
Minimum Required Education
Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent, as determined by HR)

Minimum Required Qualifications
Over one (1) year and up to two (2) years of experience, however,
any equivalent combination of education and experience is
acceptable which provides the applicant the listed knowledge,
skills, and abilities and the capability to perform the essential
functions of the job.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Management
- Two (2) years or more of financial aid experience
- Expert level computer skills
- One (1) or more years Banner experience
- One (1) to three (3) years Banner experience in Higher
Education
