Job Details
The Fire Alarm Tech II is responsible for installation, troubleshooting, programming, testing, and inspection of fire alarm systems Campus Wide. Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- As essential personnel: you are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns, and any emergencies including clean up required because of severe weather incidents. Performs snow removal activities as assigned. Such as shoveling, salting, etc. Facilities Management Division employees are essential to the overall success of Liberty University and its day-to-day functions, especially during ongoing campus events such as Winter Fest, Orientation, Convocation, Commencement, CFAW, and summer camps amongst other planned and unplanned events throughout the year. Must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise.
- Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the Fire Alarms Supervisor and/or Maintenance Manager.
- Responsible for wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing the job duties and responsibilities of an Fire Alarms Tech II and while operating related equipment including but not limited to; protective eye wear, ear protection, hard hat, gloves, steel-toed shoe, respirators/ masks, reflective safety vests, and sunscreen.
- Responsible for wearing a harness with a lanyard and other PPE if operating aerial lifts to perform & complete assigned jobs.
- Inspects buildings for code compliance. Identifies and corrects hazards.
- Performs annual inspections and preventative maintenance services on fire alarm systems.
- Installs pull stations, smoke detectors, and duct detectors.
- Complete work orders on a daily basis.
- Responsible for assigned vehicle and equipment.
- Installs, modifies, and maintains, programs and repairs fire alarm systems.
- Must be able to be on a 7 day “On Call” rotation.
- Must be able to work 1st or 2nd shift.
- Performs a variety of tasks as assigned.
- Will provide maintenance and repair for Life Safety Systems such as the Fire Alarms, Generators, Emergency Warning System, and Elevators for Liberty University at any time.
- Will provide maintenance and repair for Auxiliary Systems such as the JF Library ASRS and Bowling Alley for Liberty University at any time.
- Will maintain stock for all assigned systems.
- Maintains documentation for assigned systems.
- Work orders as needed.
- Complies with all applicable health and safety regulations, policies, and established work practices.
- Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks.
- Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.
Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies
This position requires a high school degree or GED. Must have 2+ years as a Fire Alarm Helper or related experience and a good understanding of Fire Alarm Systems. Experience with Fire Alarms in the Maintenance or Construction environments is preferred. Must have an understanding in the use of hands tools such as screwdriver, cutters, electrical strippers, etc. Basic knowledge in Voice Evac operations is preferred but not required. Must be able to understand and follow instructions, and work under limited supervision. Must be able to work well with the public and co-workers and present a positive attitude. Exceptional self-management. Desire to work with a team to accomplish goals. Urgency to grow and improve. Knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and excellent computer skills are required. Clean and professional appearance. Must be courteous, detailed oriented. Self-motivated, diligent, trustworthy, possess strong organizational and planning skills and well-developed communication skills. Must be able to lift to 50+ pounds and perform duties of the Fire Alarms trade in typical Virginia Climate. This position might require the use of and operation of aerial lifts or be willing and able to obtain aerial lift certifications, operate, and work from various aerial lifts and heights. Certifications obtained while employed by Liberty University at the expense of the employer will be reimbursed back to the University upon voluntary termination (resignation) for the first 12 months after acquiring it. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
