Background of the recruitment and description of the project
The Diapause Life Science Research Project, led by Professor Katsuyoshi Takaoka at the Life Science Center for Survival Dynamics, University of Tsukuba, conducts research on embryonic diapause in mammals.
The project aims to advance our fundamental understanding of biological phenomena through the study of mammalian embryonic diapause and to develop technological platforms for future applications based on the knowledge gained from this research.
We are seeking a fixed-term Assistant professor who will contribute to the advancement of these research activities and undertake related educational and administrative responsibilities. The initial term of employment will end on February 29, 2032, with the possibility of renewal until February 28, 2037.
Work content and job description
Embryonic diapause is a biological phenomenon in which mammalian pre-implantation embryos temporarily suspend their development for periods ranging from several days to several months, or even longer in some species. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which embryos enter, maintain, and exit diapause remain largely unknown.
The Takaoka Project aims to elucidate the mechanisms that regulate mammalian embryonic diapause, primarily through the use of genetically modified mice, embryo manipulation, imaging, omics analyses, and mathematical modeling. The project encompasses a broad range of basic and applied research topics, including the effects of a history of embryonic diapause on postnatal and adult phenotypes, as well as the development of technologies to predict and control the developmental fate of diapause embryos.
The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in one or more of these research areas while collaborating closely with other laboratory members. The candidate will also contribute to the supervision and education of students at the University of Tsukuba and undertake administrative and operational duties related to the Life Science Center for Survival Dynamics and the laboratory.

Wages description: Salary will be provided in accordance with the university’s regulations and will be determined based on the candidate’s research accomplishments and prior experience.
