Job Description:
The Fitchburg State University Police Department is seeking responsible, civic-minded students to join our Student Security Team. This role is vital to maintaining a safe, welcoming campus environment. Members act as essential eyes and ears for the department, provide community assistance, and gain valuable, hands-on experience in public safety and community engagement.
Training Provided: All necessary training including CPR/First Aid/AED certification, security functions, and federal compliance (Clery Act)will be provided by the University Police Department. At conclusion, you will be labeled as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
Duties and Responsibilities
Student Security Team members are expected to maintain a visible, professional presence on campus. Key responsibilities include:
- Community Engagement & Support: Regularly interact with and assist students, staff, and visitors; assist University Police with community outreach initiatives and provide safe walking escorts on the main campus.
- Patrols & Safety Inspections: Conduct foot patrols across campus (including during inclement weather) to physically check that buildings are secure and undamaged.
- Equipment & Infrastructure Checks: Perform routine inspections of campus lighting and emergency call boxes to ensure proper functionality.
- Incident Reporting: Identify and immediately report suspicious behavior, safety hazards, or property damage to University Police dispatch.
- Event Support: Provide security and logistical assistance at major university events, including homecoming, commencement, athletic events, concerts, and dances.
- Documentation & Compliance: Complete daily activity logs and incident reports. Act as a designated Campus Security Authority (CSA) in compliance with federal Clery Act regulations.

Qualifications & Requirements
To ensure the safety and integrity of our campus, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to walk and stand for extended periods, both indoors and outdoors, under varying weather conditions.
- Professionalism & Discretion: Must present a professional demeanor, maintain a self-motivated work ethic, and possess basic computer literacy.
- Background & Confidentiality: Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation and sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) due to the sensitive nature of the work.
- Availability & Commitment: Must have a flexible schedule (this includes weekends). Because this role directly impacts campus safety, team members must collaborate to ensure all shifts are covered. This should be considered your primary form of employment (other employment is permitted only if it does not conflict with security shifts).
Uniform & Equipment
Provided: Uniform shirts and all necessary duty equipment will be supplied by the University Police Department.
Student Responsibility: Team members must provide and wear 5.11 tactical-style khaki pants, a black belt, and solid black shoes or boots. An all-weather (Rite-in-the-Rain) pocket notebook is recommended for note taking, and end of shift reports.
Additional Information:
This is a part-time, non-benefited, student only position with an hourly rate of $15.00. Schedule varies.
