Geology Visiting Assistant Professor
St. Lawrence University invites applications for a visiting assistant position in Structural Geology or Geophysics, beginning Fall 2026.
We seek a broadly trained geoscientist whose teaching and research explores the structure, deformation, and dynamics of the Earth’s crust or the application of geophysical and GIS-based methods to geologic and environmental questions. Candidates whose research integrates field studies and quantitative or geospatial approaches and contributes to our evolving environmental science curriculum are especially encouraged to apply. The salary range is $63,000 - $65,000 annually.
Teaching responsibilities will include core courses with laboratories for geology majors, including Structural Geology and Geophysics or GIS, and introductory geology courses for non-majors. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to interdisciplinary teaching through the university’s Environmental Studies Program and to involve undergraduates in research that links geologic processes to environmental change or resource issues. We seek an individual who demonstrates a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, active field- and/or GIS-based research, and mentorship of student research projects within a liberal arts setting.
Our hard-rock geology program has an extensive rock, thin-section, and mineral collection, preparatory laboratory, and varied analytical equipment (petrographic microscopes, SEM with EDAX and color CL, magnetometer/gradiometer). Numerous opportunities are available for professional development including funding for seed grants, travel to professional meetings, internships for student researchers, and to lead field trips nationally and/or internationally.
The Geology major offers broad training in geosciences preparing students for a variety of professional careers in geology and environmental science annually graduating between 10-15 majors. Active Geology Club, AAPG Student Chapter, and chapter of the Earth Science Honor Society, Sigma Gamma Epsilon, encourage students to undertake professional activities and attend/present at the local and national levels. Our alumni network is extensive and active, and many return to campus during our Geology Alumni Conferences to consult with students and display the range of careers available to our graduates.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in structural geology, geophysics, or a closely related field (ABD candidates nearing completion will be considered).
