Duties and Responsibilities
The Groundskeeper Supervisor maintains AUM athletic fields and the landscaping surrounding athletic facilities, including managing turfgrass maintenance to ensure optimal playing conditions. Responsibilities include scheduling maintenance, supervising staff, ensuring NCAA and GSC compliance, overseeding, pesticide and fertilizer applications, coordinating daily operations, managing equipment and supplies, preparing fields for events, maintaining records, analyzing weather conditions for scheduling, and training and evaluating staff. The position also supervises the rough-cut crew to ensure all areas are properly maintained and manicured. Must be able to work irregular hours to support athletic events.
Responsibilities
- Oversees and coordinates daily operations related to turfgrass maintenance, ensuring the highest standards of care and maintenance.
- Formulates, schedules, and performs all necessary turfgrass maintenance practices on AUM Athletic Field to ensure optimal playing conditions.
- Supervises and manages all turfgrass maintenance staff, both full-time and part-time, ensuring that tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable NCAA and GSC rules and regulations in the performance of job duties. Trains and supervises staff to adhere to these rules and regulations.
- Supervises and assists with the application of pesticides and fertilizers on all athletic fields and landscapes, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards.
- Ensures all equipment is properly used, maintained, and stored, and oversees the procurement of necessary supplies and materials.
- Prepares and maintains the field for all events, ensuring it meets the required standards for performance and safety.
- Maintains accurate records of all maintenance activities, applications, and staff schedules to ensure accountability and track progress. Trains, evaluates, and makes or recommends pay, promotion, or other employment decisions for all staff members.
- Works closely with coaching staff to meet the needs of each Varsity Sport.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- General knowledge of soils and turf grass management.
- Ability to troubleshoot and perform general maintenance on equipment
- Ability to understand and use hand tools, climb ladders, operate mowers, tractors, forklifts, aerifiers, top dressers, and vertical mowers
- Ability to use computers with general knowledge of using spreadsheet software for logging applications and inventory management
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, efficient individual
- Flexible individual with the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 75 pounds and sustain the weight of a backpack blower for an extended period of time
- Ability to follow directions and adhere to schedules
- Ability to maintain a professional and respectful demeanor/attitude with coaching staff, coworkers, students, athletes, fans, and vendors
- Ability to engage effectively with others of diverse cultures or backgrounds
- Ability to work a non-standard work week, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays to support campus needs.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 2 years of experience in turf and landscape related to athletic fields and grounds.
- Familiarity with NCAA sports field marking requirements and standards
- Valid Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications
- OTPC or OTPS License
- 5 years of experience in turf management
- 2 years of experience Fertilization/Herbicide/Pesticide Application in Turf
