Position Summary:
The Grounds Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of multiple campus locations in regard to grounds/landscape at Rowan/Cabarrus College Campuses. Responsibilities will include supervision of staff, vendors and contracts. Including physical duties such as mowing; trimming; removing weeds; operating a leaf blower, lawn mower, and other maintenance equipment; picking up trash; applying herbicides and pesticides; monitoring and adjusting irrigation systems; performing routine maintenance on grounds equipment; installing landscaping materials; and maintaining related records. Will oversee work activities of assigned workers and vendors. Ability to work flexible hours as night and weekend work may be required to meet deadlines or emergency responses.
Required Education/Experience:
- Associate degree in Horticulture, Grounds and Turf Management or closely related field, and eight (8) years of experience in grounds-keeping activities; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
- Active SCM inspection & maintenance certifications, pesticide applicators license or ability to obtain certifications within one year of employment.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of: Grounds maintenance principles and practices; Applicable equipment, materials, and tools used in grounds maintenance activities; Applicable herbicides and pesticides; Record-keeping principles; Safe work practices.
Skill in: Maintaining grounds; operating and maintaining applicable grounds maintenance equipment and tools; Performing manual labor; Applying herbicides and/or pesticides; Maintaining records; Prioritizing and assigning work; Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction. Computer skills in managing emails, CMMS, and Microsoft Office.
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, driving, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noises and travel

Duty and Responsibility:
- Supervises facility staff to include: scheduling work hours, prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
- Supervises the day-to-day operations in Facilities Services, which includes: planning, coordinating, administering, and evaluating projects, processes, procedures, systems, and standards; developing and coordinating work plans; inspecting in-progress and completed work to ensure conformance with established standards; participating in the development of goals and objectives; and, monitoring compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, regulations, codes, and/or standards.
- Selects and monitors the work of contractors. Coordinates projects and assignments as required.
- Prepares, reviews, and/or maintains a variety of correspondence, records, and files related to activities of assigned area of responsibility.
- Monitors and maintains inventory; procures and monitors inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment.
- Monitors a budget, which may include preparing cost estimates for budget recommendations, submitting justifications for budget items, monitoring expenditures
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
