About the National Art School

The National Art School (NAS) is Australia’s leading independent art school. We are a ‘not-for-profit’ independent Higher Education Institution offering accredited degree programs in Fine Art at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Our distinctive studio-based teaching model; our outstanding academic faculty; and our dedicated campus support the delivery of exceptional education programs that lead to the outstanding student experience and graduate outcomes for which we are widely recognised.

The NAS campus includes specialised facilities in the studio areas of Drawing, Ceramics, Painting, Photomedia, Printmaking and Sculpture, and core studies in Art History & Theory and Professional Studies.

We currently offer degree courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA), Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours), Master of Fine Art (MFA) and Doctor of Fine Art (DFA). Our updated academic and strategic plans include a commitment to the continued evolution of our courses and subject offerings, with updated degree program structures being implemented from 2026.

NAS is at an exciting phase of development as we seek to consolidate our position as Australia’s leading independent fine art school and extend our international reach and reputation.

Central to the realisation of that ambition is our continuing commitment to the individual development of students through intensive studio-based learning under the guidance of experienced artists and educators. The continued provision of an outstanding student experience ensures we continue to attract a diverse range of talented and committed students and provide opportunities that assist our graduates to achieve professional success.

About the Drawing department

Our drawing studios and workshops support a comprehensive range of processes covering drawing modalities such as observational drawing (including life drawing), experimental drawing, expanded practices and drawing theory and critique. NAS offers specialised teaching, facilities that support study and practice in Drawing.

In addition to the full time Head of Drawing, the department includes five permanent Drawing Lecturers, a dedicated full-time Drawing Studio Technician and Sessional Academic Lecturers.
