Head of Information Literacy & Student Engagement

The Claremont Colleges Services (TCCS) is the central coordinating and support organization for a highly regarded cluster of seven independent colleges known as The Claremont Colleges. TCCS, with about 300 staff members, provides exceptional shared services to 9,000 students, and almost 3,600 faculty and staff. TCCS staff work in both student-facing services as well as administrative and operational services. Our numerous departments are located throughout The Claremont Colleges campus in the beautiful city of Claremont, California.

About the Position

The Head of Information Literacy & Student Engagement is responsible for providing creative leadership for The Claremont Colleges Library's First Year Information Literacy Instruction program and the Library's general orientation and outreach efforts. Reporting to the Director of Research, Teaching, & User Services, this position will advise and contribute to developing and assessing the division's goals and strategic priorities.

Essential Functions

Information Literacy & Student Engagement Outreach and Leadership

  • Manages the Undergraduate Engagement Team. Focuses on educating and supporting undergraduate students in their first two years and provides general orientations to undergraduate populations and groups.
  • Coordinate the Library's first year instruction program by liaising with relevant stakeholders at the five undergraduate colleges. Assigns Librarians to partner with faculty in these programs. Establish performance standards and metrics of success for this program aligned with assessing student learning outcomes.
  • In collaboration with the Undergraduate Engagement Team, teach First Year Information Literacy classes, lead orientations sessions.
  • Perform additional outreach, serve as liaison to various campus organizations, work at Writing Centers.
  • Contributes to the Library's general and targeted outreach efforts to students and, in collaboration with members of the Library's Senior Leadership Team, regularly evaluates outreach efforts to ensure they are achieving their goals.
  • Work closely with the Director to ensure effective two-way communication and collaboration happens between the Library and the colleges.
  • Fosters creativity and experimentation in instruction and outreach efforts to ensure they are relevant, impactful, and sustainable.

Unit Leadership

  • Work with the division's leadership team to set divisional goals and priorities. Develops a scaffolded internal training program aimed at expanding the teaching and outreach skills and capacity of Librarians, staff, and students working in the division.
  • Participates in library-wide planning and assessment projects through service on committees, task forces, and special projects.
  • Actively engages in networking and professional development through national/regional/local Library organizations through attendance, committee work, office-holding, presentations, and publications.
  • Serves on Library, TCCS, and Claremont Colleges' committees and task forces routinely.
  • Performs other related duties and projects as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Number of direct reports: 2
  • Titles of direct reports: Teaching and Outreach Librarian
  • Recruit, select, train, evaluate, and develop staff.
  • Clearly communicate job requirements and expectations.
  • Coordinate training and resources to support the performance of work duties.
  • Provide ongoing coaching that is balanced, helpful, timely, and contributes to a work environment of open communication, ownership of duties, and trust.
  • Address performance issues early, create appropriate documentation, and ensure follow through. Collaborate with Human Resources as needed.
  • Complete annual written performance reviews.

Qualifications

Unless otherwise stated, the following qualifications are required to perform the essential functions of this position, or the individual must demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed (with or without reasonable accommodation) using other qualifications not listed below.

Education/Training

  • Master's degree in library and information science from an ALA accredited program or the equivalent in a combination of relevant education, training and additional experience beyond the minimum required.

Experience

  • Three (3) years of professional experience in an academic library, with demonstrated evidence of success, and increased responsibility.
  • One (1) year of experience successfully leading a team, initiative, or project in support of exemplary research, teaching, and/or learning services.
  • Experience working with faculty and administrators in integrating information literacy into the curriculum, while promoting the expertise of Librarians in contributing to student learning and success.

Competencies

  • Demonstrated teaching excellence and knowledge of pedagogical best practices, especially inclusive pedagogy and Universal Design principles.
  • Demonstrated awareness of emerging trends and best practices in information literacy instruction, assessment, and outreach.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and an ability to communicate effectively throughout the organization.
  • Ability to successfully advocate with faculty and administrators in integrating information literacy into the curriculum and in promoting the expertise of subject and teaching Librarians in contributing to student learning and success.
  • Strong commitment to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the Library, as both a place of work and as an educational partner.
  • Passion for teaching information literacy to undergraduate students and assessing student learning.
  • Adaptable, flexible, and resilient in dealing with evolving Library and campus priorities, which may require taking on new/varied responsibilities.
  • Interest in experimenting with new modes of instruction, assessment, research, and public services.
  • Dedication to providing responsive and proactive learner-centered public services.
  • Effective planning, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Capacity for big picture and strategic thinking.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, especially the ability to work collaboratively and diplomatically as a team player.
  • Capacity for working independently to set priorities and meet deadlines.

Work Schedule

The regular hours for this full-time position are 40 hours scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday for 12 months annually. May be required to work holiday, weekend, and/or evening hours. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of the organization or business unit. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule to work partial hours remotely as approved by the supervisor.

Compensation

Pay: The salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with the duties, responsibilities, and qualifications required for the position, between $6,945.84 and $7,166.67 per month.
