Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years full-time experience in event planning, business operations or health education. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations (***Out-of-State Applicants, see "Special Notes").

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Additional four (4+) years of full-time experience in event planning, business operations or health education within a higher education or public healthcare setting. Experience delivering health focused outreach or education. Experience purchasing/ordering and inventory of supplies. Experience using Google Workspace including gmail, google docs and sheets. Experience working with students.

Brief Description of Duties:

The Health Promotion and Prevention Specialist within Student Health, Wellness and Prevention Services (SHWPS) will work in the Center for Prevention and Outreach (CPO) and will play a supportive role in enhancing student well-being by assisting with the coordination and implementation of health, wellness, and prevention initiatives across Stony Brook University. This position is responsible for supporting and coordinating activities for the SHWPS Working Group, developing engaging educational content, and ensuring robust SHWPS representation at various campus events, including new student orientations.
The Health Promotion and Prevention Specialist will coordinate, implement, and assess large-scale health and wellness programs like BeWell Fest and health fairs, while also conducting direct health education and outreach to students. The Health Promotion and Prevention Specialist will need to be innovative, developing new small and large scale events aimed at increasing student's knowledge, attitudes and healthy behaviors surrounding health and wellness topics. The Health Promotion and Prevention Specialist will work in a team environment, often serving as the lead on events, requiring strong collaboration skills, the ability to manage expectations and ensure members have a clear idea of their role. Additionally, this role involves managing assessment and evaluation efforts for SHWPS programs, assisting with business operations such as ordering supplies and managing the Health Products program, and fostering strong relationships with both on and off-campus partners.
The incumbent plays a supportive role as a team member within Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services. In this capacity, they collaborate with other team members to collectively contribute to the overall functioning and effectiveness of the services provided. This involves actively participating in team meetings, sharing insights, and engaging in collaborative decision-making processes. The incumbent's role extends to fostering a cooperative and supportive atmosphere, ensuring seamless teamwork, and collectively working towards the common goals and objectives of Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services.

Student Health, Wellness and Prevention Services Outreach

  • Coordinate the SHWPS Working Group, responsible for generating educational content including but not limited to brochures, resource cards, presentations and social media.
  • Work with SHWPS leadership to organize representation from all departments at various campus events ensuring the campus community is knowledgeable of available resources.
  • Represent SHWPS at campus events through outreach and education including but not limited to tabling, workshops and training.

New Student Orientation

  • On behalf of Student Health, Wellness and Prevention Services, coordinate all SHWPS involvement in required and optional programming as part of the New and Transfer Student Orientation.
  • Coordinate the response to departmental requests for individualized orientation presentations including academic programs.

Large Scale Health and Wellness Events

  • Coordinate, implement and assess large scale health and wellness focused programs including but not limited to the annual BeWell Fest, Vaccine Clinics, Health and Wellness Fairs and Awareness Walks.

Peer Education and Staff Supervision

  • Coordinate a cohort of peer education interns to assist in implementing SHWPS outreach and education.
  • Coordinate student assistants as needed to support area programming.

Assessment and Evaluation:

  • Manage the distribution and assessment of the Health and Wellness Resource Survey to all new students on a semesterly basis.
  • Develop and implement programmatic assessments of various SHWPS programs to identify room for improvement and increased efficiency.

Health Education and Outreach

  • Conduct health education and outreach to increase student knowledge and attitudes around utilizing SHWPS resources.
  • Develop innovative programs to address students' most pressing health concerns.

Business Operations and Community Liaison

  • Assist in ordering supplies for SHWPS based outreach and events after successful completion of required procurement training.
  • Assist in coordinating the Health Products program including refilling distribution stations, navigating vendor relationships and contracts and developing relationships to expand access.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with on and off-campus partners.

This position is based on Stony Brook University's main (West) campus but will require occasional work/travel to the East (hospital) and Southampton campuses as the position serves all Stony Brook students. Travel to regional, state or national professional development opportunities and/or training may also be required at times.

Professional Development and Committee Involvement

  • Participates in opportunities that promote their learning, growth, and development (i.e., classes, training, committees, webinars).
  • Contributes to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas within and outside your department/unit (i.e., campus-wide traditions, events, programs).
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
  • Evening and weekend work will be required at times.

Special Notes:

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non-Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

Salary: $60,000 + $4,000 Location Pay = $64,000 Total Compensation
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

***Out-of-State Applicants: Please note as a condition of employment and in order for this position to be tendered, the successful incumbent will be required to provide evidence of a valid license and driving abstract from the state issuing the license within five business days of a conditional offer and must obtain a NYS driver's license within 30 days of start date.***
