About the opportunity
As a key member of the Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) Professional Services Unit, the HSW Partner plays a pivotal role in supporting designated stakeholder groups and driving the effective implementation of the University’s Health and Safety Management System.
This position provides expert guidance on strategy, policy, planning, and risk management to help foster a safe and healthy working environment across the University. A versatile and proactive practitioner, the HSW Partner contributes across a broad range of activities including risk management, incident investigation, coaching and advisory support, in‑field assurance, and stakeholder engagement.
Experience in contractor safety management and psychosocial risk is highly valued, particularly in ensuring critical risk controls are effective and in strengthening contractor engagement. Working collaboratively with colleagues across the HSW PSU and the wider University, the role helps ensure consistent application of the HSMS and supports both local and University‑wide HSW initiatives, with additional specialist expertise available through Senior Specialists within the PSU.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- provide high-quality, expert Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) advice to leaders, managers and workers operating in hazardous and complex environments
- support the development, implementation and communication of HSW policies, procedures and programs across stakeholder groups
- provide guidance and coaching to leaders and staff on HSW governance, management systems and legislative compliance in line with University requirements
- build strong, trusted partnerships with leaders, managers and staff through high levels of engagement and on-site presence
- support the annual review of client group HSW Plans and support the development of local HSW action plans where required
- identify, plan and implement agreed HSW projects aligned to University strategy, priorities and stakeholder needs.
About you
- postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of training and experience
- demonstrated experience in developing an effective and sustainable safety culture and of conceptualising, developing, and implementing practical compliance and safety programs
- excellent negotiation, conflict resolution, relationship building, coaching and influencing skills together with high level of tact, diplomacy and discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality
- knowledge of Risk Management practices and the application of government legislation, codes of practice and Australian standards
- demonstrated practical experience of Work Health and Safety with a demonstrated understanding of relevant legislation, Australian standards, and guidelines
- experience in construction, infrastructure and facilities management is highly desirable.
