About Our Research: The research project focuses on carbonyl sulfide (COS), the most abundant long-lived sulfur gas in the atmosphere with a lifetime of a few years. COS is an important source for background stratospheric sulfate aerosols, which have significant control on Earth’s albedo, and hence temperature. COS is used as a promising proxy for terrestrial gross primary production (photosynthesis), which controls atmospheric CO2 concentration, based on the fact that COS largest sink is through terrestrial plant stomata, which also take up CO2. The goal of the current project is to enable a better understanding of ocean COS and CS2 sources and sinks, both on the global and the local scales, through the use of stable isotopes. The research will include measurements of the sulfur isotopes ratio in COS emitted from the ocean, and measurements of the COS isotopic fractionation during different processes. The research will be based on lab experiments, and sampling at sea, in cruises leaving from Israel and the USA.
Job Description: We are seeking a motivated and persistent PhD candidate with a broad interest in Earth and environmental sciences to join our project, “Identifying Ocean COS and CS2 sources by sulfur stable isotopes.” The candidate will conduct fieldwork and laboratory work, using cutting-edge stable isotope measurement techniques and advanced analytical systems. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research related to biogeochemical cycles, global change, and climate science. The research is led by Prof. Alon Angert, and funding is provided throughout the course of study.
About Your Supervisors:
Prof. Alon Angert is a renowned researcher in the field of Earth Sciences, specializing in biogeochemical cycles and environmental processes. He is part of the Department of Earth Sciences at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Prof. Angert has extensive experience in studying biogeochemical processes and stable isotopes, and he is dedicated to mentoring students, encouraging interdisciplinary approaches, and fostering a collaborative research environment. Alongside Prof. Alon Angert, the research is led by Prof. Alon Amrani who has made contributions to both fundamental science and applied geochemistry, including studies of sulfur partitioning in sedimentary rocks and gas composition in subsurface environments.

Benefits
The position is fully funded, with an annual stipend of 96,000 NIS to 120,000 NIS (~29,000 USD to ~36,000 USD) for the first stage, with increases in advanced stages.
