Position Highlights

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the College of Medicine - Tucson seeks a talented Histotechnologist to support both the College of American Pathology (CAP)-accredited Comparative Pathology Core Lab (CPCL) and the office of the Vice Chair for Research. The ideal candidate will work under moderate supervision, possess knowledge and skills in histological techniques and equipment, embrace a culture of safety, communicate clearly across multiple levels (faculty, staff, and administration), maintain exceptional attention to detail, and provide insight into troubleshooting moderately complex problems.

Duties & Responsibilities

CPCL Services:

  • Accessing, grossing, snap-freezing, processing, and embedding tissue specimens.
  • Microtomy, cryosectioning, staining (H&E, special, immunohistochemistry or IHC, and immunofluorescence or IF), to include assisting with development and validation of related protocols.
  • Tissue microarray construction.
  • Interface with clients and troubleshoot a variety of processes.
  • Convey details of projects to supervisor for accurate billing.
  • Documentation and clerical tasks.
  • Full slide image scanning including bright-field and fluorescent.

Technician duties to the Vice Chair's office:

  • Assist with chemical inventory and chemical/biosafety hygiene plans for the Vice Chair and other faculty.
  • Liaise with Banner Health and the Comprehensive Cancer Center to pull case materials.
  • Inventory and organization.
  • Any duties listed as part of CPCL in support of the Vice Chair.

General Laboratory/Department Duties:

  • Maintain related equipment including but not limited to microtomes, water baths, mass spectrometers, immunostainers, tissue processors, and embedding stations.
  • Assist with quality and document control and contribute to SOPs.
  • Develop and maintain organizational system for blocks and slides.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge and experience with the principles practices and techniques of tissue processing, microtomy, and staining.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency (Office suite, etc.)
  • Expertise with microtomy and histology specific to breast tissues is ideal.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field plus 3 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Histotechnician (HT) or histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or willingness to certify within one year of hire.
