HVAC Technician I
Job Summary/Description:
Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the university’s HVAC and Central Plant systems. Works under the direction of the Lead HVAC/Controls Technician to carry out both corrective and preventive maintenance tasks, ensuring efficient and reliable system performance.
Typical Duties/Job Duties:
- Lubricates and cleans mechanical parts, as well as changes air filters on equipment
- Participates in repair and maintenance of HVAC, refrigeration and related mechanical equipment with difficult or special problems.
- Performs water test, analyzes and treats hot, chilled and condenser water systems. Maintains equipment logs.
- Keeps Lead HVAC/Controls Technician informed of equipment status, communicates with Facilities
- Management personnel, faculty, staff and contractors and attends trainings, seminars, and other meetings as needed.
- Performs after hour, holiday and weekend repairs on a rotating on call schedule and as
- needed in the event of emergencies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of HVAC systems maintenance, including related electrical and pneumatic controls.
- Basic knowledge of math, algebra and geometry.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to gain knowledge of university policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of environmental requirements related to building maintenance.
- Demonstrate initiative and perform quality work in a busy, multi-task environment.
- Basic knowledge of chemistry and physics as related to plant issues.
- Ability to operate computer keyboard.
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment to component level.
- Ability to read and understand complex manuals and diagrams.
- Must be able to adjust to changing priorities.
- Ability to operate maintenance vehicles, industrial hand and power tools, welder, personnel lifts, fork lift, computers, sheet metal fabrication, equipment, software, fax, copier, and calculators.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED certification required.
- 3 years HVAC experience Technician type I or higher.
- Refrigeration EFA approved certification is required.
- Technical school training in HVAC or related systems preferred.
- Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and have a driving record acceptable to the University’s insurance company.
