Essential Job Duties:
This position provides advanced patient care within the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center, the 24/7 critical care center for the hospital. The ICU offers exposure to a wide range of complex small animal and exotic cases, providing an excellent opportunity to grow technical skills in a high-acuity, collaborative environment.
The ICU technician delivers comprehensive medical care and coordinates treatment for hospitalized patients in partnership with specialty services, clinicians, students, and staff. Responsibilities include direct patient care such as triage, monitoring, diagnostics, and treatment for critically ill or post-operative patients. Duties also involve administering medical therapies and performing advanced procedures-such as catheter placement, transfusions, ventilator monitoring, anesthesia recovery, and emergency response (CPR). The technician ensures accurate medication dosing, operates specialized monitoring and life-support equipment, and observes patients recovering from surgery or managing acute and chronic conditions.
This role also supports hospital operations through accurate documentation, communication, and mentorship. Responsibilities include teaching and coaching students, interns, and residents; maintaining compliance with hospital infection control and safety standards; and assisting with client communication and visitations. Additionally, this position requires the ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.

Essential Job Duties
- Provide advanced nursing care and continuous monitoring for ICU patients, including those with critical, surgical, or infectious conditions.
- Perform medical treatments and advanced procedures such as catheterization, oxygen therapy, transfusions, and ventilator support.
- Accurately calculate and administer medications, IV fluids, and pain management therapies.
- Work effectively with computers and electronics.
- Support clinicians and students in patient diagnostics, anesthetic recovery, and emergency procedures.
- Maintain detailed and accurate patient records, ensure proper use of hospital information systems, and uphold infection control and safety standards.
- Participate in training, teaching, and mentoring of students, interns, and residents.
- Lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Other Work/Responsibilities:
- Assist with client communication and visitation.
- Maintain a clean, well-stocked, and functional ICU environment.
- Support compliance with OSHA, EHS, and radiation safety policies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support hospital operations.
Minimum Experience/Education:
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.
Required Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a canine / feline veterinary setting and the desire to teach 4th year veterinary students.
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors; ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations; and ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations and ability to provide high quality customer service.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem solving and team advancement.
- Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics and ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a canine / feline veterinary setting.
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations while providing high quality customer service.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem solving and team advancement.
- Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high quality care for all patients, requesting assistance when needed.
Required license or certification:
- Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state
- Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program
