About the Canada Impact + Research Chairs Program

The Canada Impact+ Research Chairs program is a one-time initiative designed to support institutions in attracting world-leading researchers to address critical national and global challenges. The program emphasizes both research excellence and tangible impact. Impact+ Chairs will receive long-term funding and institutional supports that advance ambitious and transformative projects in Canada’s strategic priority areas, build and maintain exceptional research teams, and collaborate with partners across sectors and borders. Impact+ chairholders will drive the translation of discoveries into applications, commercialization and social and economic benefits for Canada and the world, and develop the next generation of highly qualified personnel.

Ontario Tech University invites applications for full-time, faculty positions to advance transformational health science research programs that support the growth of the Canadian economy in the fields of neuroscience and AI, or bioinformatics (targeting health applications).

The nominee’s research area must demonstrably align with one or more of the categories listed above. The Impact+ Chairs are valued at $1 million per year or $500,000 per year for eight years.

The Impact+ nomination is a two-stage process where applicants first apply to this job posting. Successful applicants then work with our institution to submit a nomination to the Impact+ Research Chairs program. The university will support successful nominees throughout the development of their applications. This position is subject to budgetary approval.

The Ideal Candidate The Impact + Chairs program specifies that candidates must be:

  • internationally renowned scholars and scientists in areas of strategic importance to Canada, with a recent track record of research accomplishments.
  • internationally based (both working and residing outside of Canada) at the time of the intake’s application deadline are eligible to apply.
  • full professors or associate professors, or if recruited from outside the academic sector, they must possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed at these levels.

Successful candidates will have an established, excellent, innovative and internationally recognized research trajectory and an outstanding, independent, externally funded research program. The candidate’s record of excellence in research should be demonstrated by a record of significant, sustained contributions and publications in top-ranked and field-relevant academic journals and internationally ranked presses, participation in professional associations through conference presentations and service work, obtaining competitive funding sources, and strong research collaborations. In keeping with the program’s objectives of research excellence and impact, successful candidates will have a strong record of research impact, including research translation, mobilization, and application with concrete economic and/or social benefits for a range of end users and stakeholders. The candidate will have a demonstrated record of teaching excellence, with a teaching program at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and experience as an effective supervisor and mentor of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Ontario Tech University requires that successful candidates must have a PhD in a discipline appropriate to the field of research. The successful candidate will be expected to follow a 40% Research, 40% Teaching and 20% Service workload each year. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will be appointed to one of the following Faculties: Health Sciences, Science or Business and Information Technology.

The successful candidate must be able to maintain eligibility to obtain funding from Canadian federal, provincial, international funding agencies and must be able to maintain compliance with Canadian and US trade controls including sanctions and/ or export control regulations and the federal government’s Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern.

  • Cover letter addressing how the applicant’s career achievements align with the Impact+ program objectives, the candidate research profile outlined above, and specifying the specific stream(s) to which their research relates identified above;
  • A detailed current curriculum vitae (if applicable, we encourage applicants to explain any career interruptions that might have affected research productivity);
  • A concise description of current and future research plans (up to 3 pages);
  • A description of the applicant’s 1) past experience with recruiting, training, and mentoring a diverse group of trainees, and creating an equitable and inclusive research environment; and 2) future strategies for implementing equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in the Impact+ Chair position to recruit and train a diverse research team as well as create an inclusive and diverse research environment;
  • Full text of three research publications reflecting topics, theoretical approach and methods relevant to the Impact+ Chair position;
  • The name and contact information of three referees. These referees may be asked by the University to provide letters of reference.

Compensation This position falls within the bargaining unit represented by the UOIT Faculty Association and will be subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the University and the UOIT Faculty Association collective agreement may be found on the Human Resources section of our website. Starting salary will be commensurate with experience and annual salary increases are administered as per the terms outlined in the collective agreement.
