The Opportunity
The Academic Skills Adviser (ASA) Program at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in their transition to and participation in tertiary education. The program provides supplementary, tailored academic skills support designed to strengthen study capability, build confidence, and enhance student success throughout their university journey.
We are seeking Academic Skills Advisers (Casual) to provide culturally responsive, one-on-one academic support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across a range of study areas and programs. Working collaboratively with students and the Buranga Centre team, you will assist students to develop effective study strategies, navigate university expectations, and achieve their study goals.
Academic Skills Advisers are engaged on an hourly basis, with work offered according to student demand during each study period. Support is delivered through one-hour appointments in person across UniSC campuses or conducted online via Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
You will
- provide tailored academic skills assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across a range of study areas and programs;
- assist students to develop effective study habits, time management strategies, and exam preparation techniques, and independent learning skills;
- assist students to understand assignment requirements, academic writing expectations, referencing, and assessment rubrics;
- build students’ academic confidence and assist students transitioning into university life at UniSC; and
- contribute to a culturally safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment that promotes student success and engagement.
About you
You are a supportive and approachable educator who enjoys helping students build confidence and succeed in their studies. You bring strong communication and interpersonal skills, experience supporting student learning, and the ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.
You will possess:
- a university degree (undergraduate and/or postgraduate qualification);
- experience tutoring, providing academic assistance to students, or supporting academic skills development within an educational setting;
- strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain academic concepts clearly and support students with varying learning needs; and
- a current Blue Card (Queensland Working with Children Check), or eligibility to obtain one.
Highly regarded
- experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples; and/or
- experience providing academic assistance to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students.
