Information Specialist

Position Summary:

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Information Specialist for the Center for Pharmacoepidemiology and Treatment Science (PETS) within Rutgers Health. This position will report to the Assistant Director of Coding and Data Quality within the PETS Center and will support faculty and research teams by providing foundational data management, analytic, and reporting support across multiple research projects. The Information Specialist serves as an early-career data analyst, contributing to the preparation, organization, analysis, and validation of research data used in observational, outcomes, pharmacoepidemiologic, and health services research. This role works collaboratively with investigators, analysts, and project staff to ensure data integrity, assist with quantitative analyses, and support the effective communication of research findings. This position will support analyses on multiple studies in the field of pharmacoepidemiology and treatment science.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Assists with the acquisition, preparation, cleaning, documentation, and organization of large and complex healthcare claims, electronic health records, and other research datasets derived from administrative, clinical, survey, or other secondary data sources.
  • Performs routine and complex data analyses involving complex modeling and advanced use of statistical and analytic tools under the supervision and guidance of senior analysts, the Assistant Director of Coding and Data Quality, and/or faculty using established statistical and analytical methodologies.
  • Supports data linkages across multiple large scale and complex data sources and contribute to quality control activities to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency of analytic datasets.
  • Generates tables, figures, methods and results summaries, maps, and visualizations to support research reports, presentations, manuscripts, and grant applications.
  • Assists in conducting data validation checks, troubleshooting discrepancies, and documenting data processing and analytic workflows.
  • Collaborates with research team members to interpret analytic outputs and support sensitivity or descriptive analyses as needed.
  • Maintains organized records of datasets, annotated code, documentation, and analytic decisions in accordance with data governance, privacy, and security requirements.
  • Supports compliance with institutional policies, IRB requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations related to human subjects research and data use.
  • Participates in the testing, implementation, and adoption of analytic tools, software, or data systems used by the research team.
  • Stays current with relevant analytical methods, data management best practices, and institutional compliance standards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned in support of PETS Center research, training, and research dissemination/communication activities.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, data science, health informatics, life sciences, social sciences, or a related analytical or scientific field; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working with large datasets, supporting data management and data analysis, or research operations as an analyst in an academic, healthcare, research, or public sector environment.

Equipment Utilized:

  • Office computer and standard office equipment.
  • Statistical and analytic software (e.g., SAS, R, Stata, SQL, GIS or similar).
  • Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Secure data storage, computing environments, and research data systems.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Standing, sitting, walking, talking, hearing, and typing.
  • No special vision requirements.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Light physical activity possible.
  • Office environment. Moderate noise.
