The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University is a world-renowned research and education hub at the forefront of natural language processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction. Established within the School of Computer Science, LTI pioneers innovative approaches to understanding, processing, and generating human language in both written and spoken forms.
LTI is seeking a Research Associate to assist with working on our ongoing research project examining the safety of tool-using AI agents, exploring how to make AI agents safer using on-the-fly mitigation methods. Ultimately, this will involve conducting the research and writing it up as an academic paper.
Core Responsibilities
- Help with designing and implementing evaluation frameworks to assess the safety and alignment of autonomous AI systems.
- Analyze model behavior in open-ended environments and document safety implications.
- Help co-author and contribute formal research papers for publication in AI safety and NLP venues.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.
- 1-3 years of research experience in machine learning, natural language processing, AI safety or AI systems.
- Strong analytical, communication, problem-solving and reasoning skills.
- A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
