Designed by Steven Holl Architects and located at the corner of Broad and Belvidere, the Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) at VCU presents the art of our time and provides an open forum for dialogue and collaboration across the region and throughout the world. With free admission, the ICA is a major resource for VCU, Richmond, and beyond.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Description of the Job:

The Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU is seeking friendly, motivated, and outgoing individuals to support the VPM + ICA Community Media Center (CMC). CMC Technicians serve as front-line representatives of the ICA and the CMC, ensuring that all visitors experience a welcoming, safe, and educational environment.

The VPM + ICA Community Media Center is a free, public media production studio and learning space that expands access to media literacy, recording tools, and storytelling resources for VCU students and the Greater Richmond community. This position supports daily operations of the CMC, assists visitors with studio use, and upholds ICA and CMC policies and values.

Key Responsibilities: Visitor Engagement and Support

  • Provide excellent customer service by greeting visitors, answering questions, and introducing guests to the CMC’s mission, resources, and ICA offerings.
  • Assist with wayfinding and scheduling of studio sessions, consultations, and workspace bookings.
  • Provide tours of the CMC and engage visitors in conversations about ICA exhibitions, programs, and events.
  • Collect visitor attendance data and maintain accurate usage records.
  • Communicate visitor feedback, questions, or concerns to supervisors.

Studio Orientation & Media Support

  • Conduct orientations for new studio users, including recording workflows, microphone technique, audio routing, and file management.
  • Assist visitors with basic troubleshooting during recording sessions.
  • Enforce studio rules and policies to ensure safe and responsible use of equipment.

Operational and Safety Support

  • Support opening, closing, and day-of operations for the CMC as scheduled.
  • Monitor visitor activity to ensure safety and appropriate equipment use.
  • Follow established procedures for incident reporting and emergency response.
  • Support CMC-related events, workshops, and private group bookings.

Equipment Care & Space Maintenance

  • Monitor and safeguard CMC equipment and report technical issues.
  • Maintain cleanliness and readiness of studios and public areas.
  • Reset spaces and replenish supplies between sessions.

Team Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with ICA and CMC staff to support daily operations and public programs.
  • Participate in monthly team meetings and regular check-ins with the CMC Director.

On-Call Working Model

  • In addition to regularly scheduled hours, additional shifts may be available based on demand, events, and staffing needs.
  • Partial evening and weekend availability is required.
  • Shifts may vary week to week in a dynamic, public-facing environment.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Comfort engaging with the public in a professional manner.
  • Ability to learn and communicate basic audio concepts.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to enforce policies and maintain a safe environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally.

Salary Range: $15/hour
