Virginia Military Institute (VMI) seeks a passionate, creative, and user-focused professional to join Preston Library as an Instruction and Outreach librarian. The successful candidate will: oversee all aspects of research and instruction services including policies and procedures; advocate for innovative library instruction; and assess programs to help the library understand and respond to cadet and faculty research and information needs. The librarian will work closely with faculty, instructors, and administrators to cultivate and promote Preston Library through outreach programming. This position will also be an advocate for the continuous improvement of the user’s experience (UX) of the library’s virtual services.
This position is a full-time, uniformed (non-active duty), non-tenure-track, Administrative/Professional Faculty Librarian position that reports to the Library Director. This librarian will participate in night and weekend duty as required.
Responsibilities:
- Design and deliver user-focused instruction sessions.
- Maintain online research tools and create research aids that facilitate library usage (e.g., research guides).
- Coordinate outreach with partners on Post to promote library services; create and maintain a visible presence on Post, representing Library initiatives.
- Maintain knowledge of current trends in reference/research services, library instruction, and incorporate these trends into the work of the library.
- Plan-, organize- and market- library events and programs.
- Coordinate the marketing of library services through a variety of channels, including social media, print, and email.
- Advocate for the continuous improvement in UX design of library resources and tools.
- Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with library instruction and assessment
- Evidence of experience in the delivery of instruction, research services, and programming to faculty and students
- Experience with Springshare platform and its services.
- UX sensitivity and advocacy
- Outreach experience
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree from an American Library Association-accredited graduate program or related graduate degree.
- Academic library experience related to public services including research, teaching, UX, or outreach.
- Demonstrated commitment to user-centered services for students, faculty, and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and build relationships with colleagues and peers.
- Excellent interpersonal written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills.
