This is a fixed-term, non-tenure-track, nine-month Instructional Assistant Professor of Geology position. Initial appointments may be made for up to three years and renewed contingent upon satisfactory performance and institutional need. Primary duties will include teaching geology and earth science lecture and laboratory courses, including courses that fulfill University core curriculum needs; contributing to instruction in Civil Engineering, including Hydraulics and Hydrology; and providing GIS-related instruction in Systems Engineering. The successful candidate will also support teaching in the School's other programs as needed. Duties also include advising and mentoring students; supporting curriculum development, assessment, recruitment, accreditation, and instructional laboratory activities; and participating in School service. This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

The School of Engineering offers ABET-accredited programs in Systems, Computer, and Petroleum Engineering. Its BS in Computer Science and MS in Systems Engineering launched in 2026, and its BS in Civil Engineering launches in 2027. This position is part of a strategic faculty expansion in the School of Engineering to hire 10 permanent faculty members, eight tenure-track and two instructional, beginning Fall 2027.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Geology, Geosciences, Earth Science, or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date. Applicants nearing completion may be considered if the degree is awarded before appointment. Candidates must demonstrate appropriate academic preparation to teach geology and earth science lecture and laboratory courses. Academic preparation or teaching experience in hydrology, water resources, environmental geology, GIS, remote sensing, geospatial analysis, or related areas supporting engineering curricula is especially desirable. Experience in laboratory or field-based instruction, curriculum development, student mentoring, or interdisciplinary teaching is also desirable.

We offer competitive salaries and a benefits package including health insurance, retirement benefits, and life insurance. Additional pay is available for summer teaching. Financial support for professional development opportunities, such as attending academic conferences, is also provided. Moving expenses are covered in whole or in part by the University.

Application Process

The completed employment application must include:

  • A letter of interest or cover letter that addresses the candidate's qualifications for the position.
