Position Description

The School of Applied Sciences and Arts, with the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts, invites applications for a First-Year Composition Instructor position for the 2026-2027 academic year. The Instructor position serves the Polytechnic campus of Arizona State University. The successful candidate will teach a 5/5 course load of undergraduate courses in First-Year Composition for on-ground students in face-to-face classrooms; prepare class materials; evaluate student work; and hold office hours to assist students. The Instructor position is a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure eligible position renewable on an academic year basis, contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the university. Candidate must reside in Arizona or be willing to relocate.

The School of Applied Sciences and Arts in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts at Arizona State University delivers applied sciences and liberal arts courses to students from all majors at the Polytechnic and Downtown Phoenix campuses. It has more than 170 full-time faculty who serve nearly 4,500 students majoring in career-focused, applied-learning programs, including undergraduate applied biology majors in pre-veterinary medicine, pre-dental, and sustainable horticulture; applied physics; applied quantitative science; interdisciplinary studies; science, technology, and society; history of science, technology and innovation; communication; and more.

The School of Applied Sciences and Arts leads ASU's Writers' Studio, which provides first-year composition courses to all ASU Online students. It also offers the nation’s first degree in military and veterans studies led by ASU’s Office for Veteran and Military Academic Engagement (OVMAE). The OVMAE is committed to the robust support of veteran, military-affiliated and dependent students. The school is also home to the Latinx Oral History Lab, which offers undergraduate research and storytelling opportunities. Essential Functions:

  • Teach a 5/5 course load of undergraduate courses in First-Year Composition for on-ground students in face-to-face classrooms at the Polytechnic campus
  • Prepare class materials and course content
  • Evaluate student work and provide feedback
  • Hold office hours to assist students
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and communities

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in English or a related field at time of appointment
  • Evidence of one year of full-time, post-secondary experience teaching English composition or related courses (or two years of part-time experience)
  • Commitment to advancing the values expressed by the ASU Charter

Desired Qualifications:

  • Doctoral or terminal degree in English or related field at time of appointment
  • Experience incorporating Artificial Intelligence lessons in the classroom
  • Two years of full-time teaching experience in English Composition courses in a post-secondary environment
  • Experience teaching in digital environments such as Canvas (asynchronously and/or synchronously)
