Irrigation Technician
Job Summary
Install, repair and maintain campus irrigation. May act as a crew lead during lead absence. Position will be required to accomplish all groundskeeping activities in additional or in lieu or irrigation responsibilities based on the most urgent needs of the department.
Responsibilities
The job duties include, but are not limited to:
Install, repair and maintain campus irrigation
- Install irrigation as required for new landscapes or to provide coverage as needed
- Repair irrigation
- Provide and maintain campus irrigation watering schedules
- Perform preventative maintenance for campus irrigation systems
- Responsible for recording irrigation as-built.
- Wire training and repairing automated irrigation.
Leads Grounds Crews
- Participates in and assigns tasks Grounds keepers and Maintenance workers.
- Reviews results continuously and confers with Grounds Foreman or Manger on daily activities.
- Provides safety and technical training
- Ensures the use of appropriate personal protection equipment and power equipment safety devices
- Responsible for recording labor and material information into Maximo.
- Responsible for entering time in OneUSG
Maintain Groundcovers, Shrubs, Trees, and Turf grass
- Prunes shrubs and trees; mows lawns with proper equipment. Collect and removes lawn cuttings and debris.
- Line trims around signs, trees, value boxes and edges along walks, curbs and beds.
- Controls weeds manually and with the application of mulch and chemical herbicides to bed areas. Applies fertilizer to shrubs and trees. Hand waters new plants and trees.
- Inspects lawns and shrub beds prior to mowing or pruning for obstacles such as debris, irrigation heads, rocks, limbs, valve boxes, etc.
- Perform routine and emergency tree pruning with JLG Lift when required
- Monitors and coordinates manual watering for new landscape plantings. Inspects annual bed soil conditions
Maintains Grounds Equipment
- Ensures routine maintenance are performed (oil change, filter change, fasteners tightened, blades replacement, trimmers lubricated, etc.) and properly documented
- Ensures oil checks prior to starting to engine
- Ensures daily cleaning of equipment after usage
- Coordinates equipment maintenance and repair needs with grounds mechanic
- Notifies Grounds Foreman of safety and maintenance/repair concerns
Operates Vehicles and Light Construction Equipment.
- Safely operates, vehicles, golf carts, mowers, street sweepers, and small tractors
- Operate the backhoe (transporting mulch, debris, excavation assignments)
- Checks fluid levels prior to starting
- Cleans vehicle and equipment (Interior and Exterior)
- Coordinates vehicle (trucks, golf carts, and tractors) maintenance and repair with Automotive Services
Waste Management
- Removes lawn cuttings, plant clippings, and tree limbs; and places them in yard waste container.
- Remove litter and chewing gum from campus grounds, parking lots, and streets
- Cleans and empties waste containers
- Assist with packing waste, yard debris and cardboard roll off containers by operating backhoe
Cleans and Organizes Grounds Warehouse
- Sweeps floors and removes debris
- Keeps tools, equipment, and vehicles in good condition and stored properly
- Returns flammable products containers to fireproof storage cabinets at end of each day
- Makes sure that all fuel containers are properly labeled and safety compliant
- Safeguards and secures grounds equipment
- Monitor shop supplies and PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) and submits requests to Foreman
Performs Related Work As Required
- Coordinates and assists crews with campus event setups (Pig Out, A Day, Orientation, etc.), pressure washing, weed and pest control, irrigation and masonry repairs, painting assignments
- Follows all departmental and University policies. Treats students, coworkers, supervisors, faculty, and visitors with respect
- Wears uniform as outlined in policy and maintains good hygiene
- Attends campus event walk through and setup meetings. Oversees the setup and teardown of events to completion
- Fills in for the Foreman during times of absence
- Performs any duties and assignments as instructed by supervisor
Required Qualifications
High School diploma or GED from a recognized State or Federal accredited organization with valid drivers license OR three years of experience in irrigation installation and repairs with valid drivers license.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
ABILITIES
Able to read and comprehend location maps. Able to read and generate irrigation plans. Experience in landscape chemical applications.
KNOWLEDGE
Experience in irrigation installation. Ability to analyze irrigation systems, identify flaws and suggest and implement corrective actions. Working knowledge of antiquated and modern irrigation systems. Ability to follow specific oral and written instructions. Ability to use standard power and hand tools. Ability to perform heavy manual labor under all conditions. Ability to operate and maintain grounds equipment. Ability to delegate and review performance. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
SKILLS
Must be able to work independently but also part of team. Must possess initiative and self motivational skills. Must be able to work well with others, must possess ability to make decisions independently on routine assignments.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days: Monday - Friday
Pay Band: 2
Salary Minimum: $15.77/hour - $18.81/hour
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
