James Cook University Hiring a Senior Lecturer in General Practice and Rural Medicine

A role built for the rural GP shortage

Rural Queensland is running out of GPs, and James Cook University has opened a senior lecturer role in Townsville to train the people who will fix it.

You would report to the College of Medicine and Dentistry's General Practice and Rural Medicine discipline. The job combines medical student teaching, registrar supervision, curriculum development, rural placement coordination, and a research agenda tied to remote health outcomes.

This is not a cosy teaching-only post. You will be in clinics, in tutorials, on rural roads, and in front of the same workforce problems that have made general practice the hardest-to-staff part of Australia's health system.

A role built for the rural GP shortage

JCU's General Practice and Rural Medicine discipline exists to feed the rural workforce. At senior lecturer level, you take the lead on teaching, registrar supervision, curriculum delivery, placement coordination, and research that measures whether rural training actually produces rural doctors.

The teaching load at this level usually comes with an expectation that you publish, supervise research students, and represent the discipline in university and hospital committees. This is not a post for someone who wants to hide from clinical contact.

What you would actually do

At senior lecturer level, the workload splits across teaching, research, service, and clinical supervision. But the day-to-day is more concrete than that. A typical week might include a Monday student skills session, a Tuesday telehealth review with GP registrars, and a Thursday visit to a teaching practice in Ingham or Ayr.

The role carries coordination duties too. You would help design the general practice curriculum, assess student competence, and support supervisors who take JCU students into rural practices. If you have supervised GP registrars or managed rural placements before, much of this will feel familiar.

  • Teach medical students and GP registrars in small groups and clinical settings.
  • Design and assess general practice curriculum content.
  • Coordinate rural and remote placements across northern Queensland.
  • Build evaluation and research projects focused on rural workforce retention.

Why this role exists now

The federal Health Workforce Locator marks much of regional and remote Queensland as a District of Workforce Shortage. Outside Townsville and Cairns, communities often rely on locums, fly-in fly-out clinicians, and stretched hospital emergency departments for care that a local GP should provide.

The RACGP's Health of the Nation report has tracked the same pattern year after year. Rural GPs are older on average than city GPs, more are intending to retire within five years, fewer graduates are picking general practice as a specialty, and locum costs keep rising. That is a supply problem that a decade-old policy tweak will not fix.

JCU's medical school was designed to respond to this geography. Students do placements in rural, remote and Aboriginal community-controlled health services across northern Queensland, not just in Townsville teaching wards. The College of Medicine and Dentistry has made regional workforce retention part of its identity.

So when a senior lecturer job in General Practice and Rural Medicine opens, it is not an ordinary academic recruitment. It is a direct investment in the workforce pipeline for the north.

Townsville is the point, not the compromise

Townsville is the largest city in North Queensland and the clinical hub for a catchment that stretches west to Mount Isa and north into the Torres Strait. The university sits close to Townsville University Hospital, which means clinical teaching and academic work share the same geography.

This matters because rural medicine is a practice-based discipline. You cannot teach it well from a capital-city office. You need students seeing patients with chronic disease, delayed presentations, limited access to same-day specialist advice, and the clinical judgment that comes from managing uncertainty over distance. Those conditions are normal in rural practice.

Cost of living in Townsville is lower than Sydney and Melbourne, and the city has the infrastructure of a large regional centre. For a GP academic who wants to keep one foot in clinical work, that is a practical advantage.

Who should apply

Most senior lecturer ads in this discipline expect a medical degree, current Australian medical registration, fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine, and a track record of teaching and supervision. You also need teaching experience, and a research higher degree usually helps.

If you have supervised registrars, taught medical students, led clinical training, or managed rural placements, you already have the hardest part of the application. Selection panels can teach university processes. They cannot teach someone how to be a GP in Mount Isa.

Experience with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health is highly valued. JCU has a long history of working with Indigenous health organisations across the north, and the successful candidate will step into that context from day one.

How to apply

Do not fire off a generic academic CV. The panel will be looking for evidence against the selection criteria, and that means you should treat the position description as the marking rubric.

  • Read the full position description on the official JCU careers page, including the clinical and teaching expectations.
  • Map each selection criterion to one example from your clinical education, supervision or research work.
  • Write the cover letter criterion by criterion, using the same wording the panel uses.
  • Rewrite your CV so teaching, rural practice, research and placement supervision sit above locum service summaries.
  • Submit via the official portal and keep a copy of your written responses.

If your CV still reads like a hospital employment form, fix it before you apply. The guide to writing a winning academic CV is a useful place to start.

The full role summary is also on the AcademicJobs listing, which links straight to the JCU application.

What happens next

Strong senior lecturer searches move faster than committee-heavy recruitment because the candidate pool is small. The university needs someone who can teach, supervise, lead a rural research agenda, and keep the placement network functioning, and those people are rare. If that sounds like you, do not wait for a perfect update to your CV.

This week, take one hour and put your best rural teaching example against the first selection criterion. The appointment will not go to the most qualified person on paper. It will go to the person who made it easy for the panel to see they could do the job.
