Algorithmic optimization is a core theme for computer science, in which the CNRS aims to strengthen its national and international leadership. This is driven by both its fundamental importance to the discipline and its transversal impact on major societal challenges. aim to bridge this gap between theory and practice—for example, by developing new theoretical and methodological foundations through an approach that is both rigorous and empirical, offering strong potential for transfer to academic and industrial sectors.
This CPJ targets four laboratories (CRIStAL, L2S, LAAS, LIX), which are units with a strong research dynamic in the field of optimization. The strategy of these units is to leverage this CPJ to make each of them a reference center for large-scale algorithmic optimization. By combining mathematical rigor (convergence, robustness) and application impact (interdisciplinarity and partnerships), the objective is to break through the technological barriers of processing massive and heterogeneous data, while offering the chair holder a sustainable integration pathway within this ecosystem.
Today, optimization methods now form a fundamental cornerstone for tackling complex problems in computer science, across various scientific fields (e.g., bioinformatics, neuroscience, climatology, astrophysics, health, etc.), as well as industrial contexts, societal organization, and beyond. The goal is to recruit a Junior Professor (CPJ) whose research falls within the broad field of optimization: stochastic optimization, constrained optimization, mathematical programming, optimization on manifolds, or federated and distributed optimization, using an algorithmic approach. The goal is to deepen the fundamental understanding of the algorithms that are used in practice (convergence analysis, complexity, robustness) and to adapt them to the constraints of large-scale applications (scalability, data heterogeneity, ill-posed problems, as well as communication and memory constraints).
The activities of the person recruited will be part of the training dynamic of the higher education and research establishments envisaged through their specialised teaching programmes in the field of science and technology.
The CNRS is developing a strong policy in favor of open science. Open science consists of making research results "as accessible as possible and closed as necessary". As such, the CNRS aims to make 100% of the texts of publications resulting from the work of its laboratories accessible , in particular through deposit in HAL. The data produced must also be made available and reusable, except for specific restrictions. In addition, the guiding principles of individual evaluation have been revised in accordance with the DORA declaration, to be more qualitative and to take into account all facets of the researcher's profession.
The dissemination of the results will be done through world-class scientific productions: publications, patents, software... In addition, the results will be communicated to various targets such as scientific communities, media, decision makers, general public, schools, etc., with an adapted calendar. Specific tools may be developed such as websites, newsletters, meetings, international symposia, summer schools and conferences.
The relationship between science and society is now recognized as a full dimension of scientific activity. The project will develop this dimension in synergy with all the partners. The resulting research work will contribute to informing public decision-making. Participatory science initiatives may be initiated with actors from the project's socio-economic and cultural eco-system.
