Junior Teaching Laboratory Technician

Junior Teaching Laboratory Technician

Chemistry Teaching Laboratory, The Department of Chemistry hosts one of the largest cohorts of undergraduate students studying for the Master of Chemistry (MChem) degree. The course combines theoretical and practical teaching throughout the first three years, with the fourth year spent undertaking research within one of the Department’s research groups. Undergraduate practical teaching takes place in the Chemistry Teaching Laboratory (CTL), a purpose-built facility opened in 2018 and dedicated to practical chemistry teaching. The laboratories are supported by a specialist team of technical, teaching and administrative staff and operate throughout the year.

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician to join the team supporting the two undergraduate Chemistry Teaching Laboratories. During term time, the post holder will assist with the delivery of the integrated undergraduate Practical Chemistry course, providing technical support for laboratory experiments and helping students to use equipment safely and effectively. The role will involve preparing reagents and materials for experiments, maintaining laboratory equipment and ensuring the laboratories are well organised, clean and fully stocked.

This post is permanent and full time. Outside of term time, the focus of the role will shift towards supporting outreach activities, graduate training programmes and other initiatives that take place in the laboratories, as well as undertaking maintenance and servicing of laboratory equipment and facilities. The post holder will work closely with colleagues across the laboratories to support a wide range of activities and ensure the effective day-to-day operation of the teaching environment.

The successful candidate will also contribute to the smooth running of the laboratories by supporting departmental outreach activities, participating in technician meetings and attending relevant training. Occasional reception cover may also be required.

The role requires strict adherence to Health and Safety procedures, including COSHH regulations and established departmental practices for the safe handling, storage and disposal of chemicals and hazardous substances. The post holder will help promote safe laboratory practice among students and other laboratory users and will assist with completing appropriate risk assessments and documentation where required. This post offers an excellent opportunity for someone interested in developing a career within a teaching laboratory environment.

Candidates should have an A-level in Chemistry or a related subject, or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant experience, together with a good knowledge of general science and a demonstrable interest in Chemistry. Applicants should have previous experience of working in a laboratory environment and practical experience of using laboratory equipment and apparatus. A strong understanding of laboratory health and safety requirements, including COSHH and the safe handling and disposal of chemicals, is essential.

The role also requires good intermediate IT skills, including experience of Microsoft Office and Outlook, and the ability to learn new systems quickly. Candidates must be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, and possess excellent communication skills with the confidence to engage with a wide range of stakeholders. Strong organisational and planning skills are essential, including the ability to work accurately, prioritise tasks and manage competing demands.

A practical understanding of basic instrumentation would be advantageous. The duties described above provide a framework for the role and should not be regarded as a definitive list. Responsibilities may evolve over time depending on the needs of the Department.
