The Māori Health Workforce Development Unit (MHWDU) at the University of Otago is a kaupapa-driven team committed to growing Māori success in Health Sciences education and across the health workforce in Aotearoa.

Our work spans the full Māori health workforce pipeline, supporting Māori students into, through, and beyond Health Sciences study, with the long-term goal of increasing the number of Māori health professionals and researchers serving Māori communities.

We are a small, collaborative, and passionate team who work closely with Māori students, whānau, schools, and communities to create clear, culturally responsive pathways into Health Sciences.

Te mahi | The role

We are seeking a Kaiārahi / Outreach and Transition (Te Ara Hauora) Programme Coordinator to join our team.

Te Ara Hauora programmes strengthen Māori engagement in Health Science learning while also demystifying university pathways. The role centres on creating, coordinating, and delivering health science enrichment and outreach initiatives, programmes, and events that support Māori secondary school students and their whānau to better understand Health Sciences pathways and make informed decisions about careers in health. This includes supporting recruitment into Health Sciences First Year and priority Health Professional Programmes as part of a connected Māori health workforce pipeline.

The position also contributes to tracking student engagement and outcomes, programme evaluation, and collaborative delivery across the Māori Health Workforce Development Unit to support Māori students into and through Health Sciences study.

Recruitment efforts are targeted toward Health Sciences First Year (HSFY), core Health Sciences degrees, and Health Professional Programmes, where increasing Māori representation is a strategic priority, including:
• Physiotherapy
• Pharmacy
• Medical Laboratory Science
• Oral Health
• Dental Technology
• Radiation Therapy
• Bachelor of Health Sciences
• Bachelor of Biomedical Science

You will also contribute, where required, across other MHWDU pipeline programmes, including Kahikatea (bridging and transition), Te Whakapuāwai (first-year support), and Tū Tauira Hauora (retention and progression), helping ensure a connected and coherent Māori student experience.

Kā pūkeka me kā wheako | Your skills and experience

We are looking for someone who is approachable, organised, and passionate about Māori education and youth development, and who enjoys working with rangatahi and whānau.

Successful candidates will also have:
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multiple projects.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication, including report writing, skills.
• Experience planning and facilitating activities and events.
• Experience working with youth.
• The ability to meet deadlines and complete tasks in a timely and professional manner.
• Competency in use of the Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel for report generation and analysis.
• Some flexibility for after-hours work (agreed in advance).
• Proficiency in te reo Māori me ōnā tikanga is desired but not essential.
• A tertiary qualification and demonstrated understanding of the tertiary sector is desired but not essential.

Pūroko | Further details

This is a fixed-term position for one year. The role can be delivered at part-time 0.6 FTE (22.5 hours) minimum to full-time (37.5 hours), negotiable.

Days and hours of work will be negotiated. Some after-hours and weekend work will be required from time to time.

The appointment range is $69,931 to $74,609 per annum (pro-rata if part-time).
