Departmental Overview

Join the Nomura Research Group (nomuraresearchgroup.com) at UC Berkeley, where we are at the cutting-edge of chemical biology, exploring innovative therapeutic strategies through chemoproteomics, covalent drug discovery, and induced proximity-based modalities. Our interdisciplinary team is dedicated to developing new approaches to treat diseases such as cancer, neurodegenerative conditions, and other challenging therapeutic targets.

Position Summary

The Nomura Research Group is focused on reimagining drug ability using chemical biology platforms to develop transformative medicines. The position will play a key role in maintaining the smooth operation of the lab and supporting its research mission. This position combines hands-on laboratory maintenance with active research assistance, working closely with and under the guidance of senior lab members, including the principal investigator, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers. The role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to balance routine operational tasks with flexible research support.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations in a 35-40-member chemical biology laboratory-comprising graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, senior scientists, and research assistants- ensuring optimal workflow and efficiency. This includes assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and coordinating communication using tools such as Slack and Trello.
  • Maintain and update daily inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents, processing orders through BearBuy and liaising with vendors to ensure timely delivery.
  • Oversee procurement activities to support continuous research operations.
  • Perform all benchwork tasks along with ordering and restocking laboratory supplies.
  • Coordinate maintenance and schedule external calibration for laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, spectrophotometers, and biosafety cabinets, and arrange repairs as needed to ensure smooth laboratory operations.
  • Ensure compliance with chemical hygiene, biosafety, and institutional safety standards.
  • Support onboarding of new lab personnel on a rolling basis by delivering standardized training on safety protocols and laboratory procedures to help them quickly integrate and work effectively.
  • Manage and update laboratory databases, protocols, and documentation using Slack and Trello, ensuring accurate and organized records.

Required Qualifications

  • Laboratory Skills: Familiarity with standard laboratory equipment, maintenance routines, and safe handling of chemicals and biological materials.
  • Research Support: ordering and restocking lab supplies and reagents; experience in assisting with experiments, data collection, and record-keeping; ability to follow protocols accurately.
  • Organization & Communication: Strong organizational skills for managing supplies, schedules, and documentation; clear communication with colleagues at all levels.
  • Compliance Knowledge: Understanding of chemical hygiene plans, biosafety procedures, and relevant safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, institutional policies).
  • Technical Proficiency: Comfort with laboratory management software, and standard office applications.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively under the guidance of senior lab members and adapt to shifting priorities in a dynamic research environment.
  • Attention to Detail: Commitment to accuracy in record-keeping, inventory management, and experimental procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Biology, or a related scientific discipline; equivalent laboratory experience will be considered and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $22.02 (Step 1) - $25.90 (Step 5).

This is a non-exempt, biweekly-paid position.
