The Juarez Lab (https://www.thejuarezlab.com/) at the University of Maryland-Baltimore (Baltimore, MD) is seeking to hire a contractual Laboratory Research Assistant. The Juarez lab uses circuit dissecting viral based CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing and neurophysiological methods to manipulate and record neural activity in animal models of stress and substance-use disorders. The candidate for this position will assist with the benchmarking of newly engineered fluorescent sensors using in vivo fiber photometry in rodents. Past laboratory experience and ability to handle mice is required. Background knowledge or experience in stereotactic surgery, behavior, and colony management is highly preferred but not required. Communicating findings during group lab meetings is expected. The Juarez lab is dedicated to the career development of all scientists in academia or other specialties.

Primary Duties:

  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: mouse colony maintenance, general housekeeping, immunohistochemisry, electrophoresis, DNA extractions, etc.
  • Perform advanced laboratory research activities such as: stereotactic surgery in mice, in vivo fiber photometry recording during behavior, microscopy techniques, imaging techniques, recombinant DNA techniques, and plasmid purification.
  • Compile and analyze research data using various relevant computer software applications.
  • Perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; assisting in developing policies, procedures, and/or methods for laboratory experimentation; presentation of results to group members,
  • May participate in the design of research studies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.

Preferred Experience: At least one year of experience working in a laboratory environment. Knowledgeable in data entry and/or word processing and/or data analysis and using spreadsheets and statistical analysis preferred. Research experience in mouse handling.

Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

Hiring Range: $49,000 - $54,000, Commensurate with education and experience
