Salary Range:

• Lab Services Supervisor I: Up to $58,900 annualized, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.
• Lab Services Supervisor II: Up to $67,450 annualized, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.
• Lab Services Supervisor III: Up to $80,750 annualized, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

Job Summary

Lab Services Supervisor I

The Lab Services Supervisor works to provide oversight and supervision of scientific teaching laboratories and related technical staff. This position plays a key role in ensuring a safe and effective learning environment by supervising technical staff and providing instructional and logistical support for laboratory classes.

Lab Services Supervisor II

The Lab Services Supervisor II provides responsible supervisory and technical skills for the distribution, oversight, and maintenance of supplies and equipment in departmental laboratories.

Lab Services Supervisor III

The Lab Services Supervisor III provides advanced supervisory and technical skills for the distribution, oversight, and maintenance of supplies and equipment in departmental laboratories. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and effective delivery of laboratory-based learning by managing laboratory setup, equipment maintenance, chemical inventory, and compliance with safety protocols and university policies.

Core Responsibilities

Lab Services Supervisor I

1. Sets up laboratory and ensures efficient operations of scientific teaching laboratories.
2. Supervises technical staff whom assist in laboratory preparation and maintenance, including partial supervision of laboratory instructors (TA's and lecturers).
3. Assists in instructing students on the use of instrumentation.
4. Orders chemicals and equipment for scientific teaching laboratories; maintains an up-to-date inventory of chemicals in the teaching laboratories and chemical stockroom.
5. Orders, maintains, and performs minor repairs on teaching instrumentation.
6. Manages the safe handling of chemicals and disposal of chemical and glass waste.
7. Provides safety instruction for laboratory classes.
8. Assists in planning and set up of the chemical section of stockrooms.
9. Updates chemical and equipment inventories.
10. Delivers safety instruction to students.
11. Takes a proactive approach to assist co-workers in various tasks, to ensure safety.
12. Performs work tasks in a safe manner and in accordance with work instructions.
13. Proactively makes recommendations to improve safety.
14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Lab Services Supervisor II/III

1. Supervises all aspects of the operations of scientific teaching laboratories for Master and Ph.D. level students while maintaining thorough knowledge of safety regulations, and departmental/university regulations, policies, and procedures.
2. Prepares specifications and oversees laboratory set-up in classrooms and labs. Oversees classroom set up for lectures and demonstrations and ensures efficient operations of scientific teaching laboratories.
3. Supervises technical staff that assists in laboratory preparation and maintenance, including supervision of laboratory instructors (TA's and lecturers).
4. Supervises and assists in instructing MA and Ph.D students on the use of instrumentation.
5. Recruits and trains lab technicians. Arranges lab technician work schedule.
6. Orders chemicals and equipment for scientific teaching laboratories; maintains an up-to-date inventory of chemicals in the teaching laboratories and chemical stockroom.
7. Supervises the construction, repair, and maintenance of all lab equipment.
8. Supervises issuance of supplies and equipment. Orders, maintains, and performs minor repairs on teaching instrumentation.
9. Oversees safe handling of chemicals and disposal of chemical and glass waste.
10. Provides safety instruction for laboratory classes.
11. Oversees planning and set up of the chemical section of stockrooms.
12. Updates chemical and equipment inventories.
13. Delivers safety instruction to students.
14. Takes a proactive approach to assist co-workers in various tasks, to ensure safety.

Required Qualifications

Lab Services Supervisor I, II, and III

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace engineering or related field.
• This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

Lab Services Supervisor I

• One (1) year of related work experience.

Lab Services Supervisor II

• Three (3) years of related work experience.

Lab Services Supervisor III

• Five (5) years of related work experience.

Physical Demands

Lab Services Supervisor I

• Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required, only occasionally. Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.

Lab Services Supervisor II/III

• Must have the ability to perform physical labor in moving stocks and maintaining laboratory storeroom and teaching laboratories in a clean and orderly condition.

This position will work primarily on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
