We now have an exciting opportunity for an energetic and experienced Laboratory and Technical Support Officer to support our Clinical Sciences team.

  • 36.25 hours per week | Fixed term until late August 2026
  • Based at our Townsville Bebegu Yumba campus
  • HEWL 5: $78,740 - $89,310 plus up to 17% employer superannuation contributions

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Laboratory and Technical Support Officer provides high-quality technical support playing a critical role in supporting undergraduate teaching in Medicine and Healthcare Sciences. Reporting within the clinical sciences teaching environment, this role provides hands‑on technical expertise that enables engaging, safe, and effective practical learning experiences for students.

You will work closely with academic staff to prepare, support, and deliver laboratory and simulation‑based classes, including the use of high‑fidelity simulation equipment. The role is central to ensuring teaching spaces, equipment, and medical instruments are maintained to a high standard, compliant with safety, hygiene, and Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements.

This position also contributes to continuous improvement across laboratory and technical services, supporting best‑practice processes, minimising operational risk, and enhancing the overall student and staff experience.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering high‑quality technical support for undergraduate clinical and laboratory-based teaching activities.
  • Preparing, maintaining and cleaning medical instruments, manikins, and associated equipment to ensure readiness for clinical sessions.
  • Supporting the safe operation of teaching and research laboratories in line with WHS legislation, hygiene standards, and University procedures.
  • Assisting with risk mitigation through appropriate cleaning, waste disposal, and equipment servicing practices.
  • Providing informed guidance to staff and students on laboratory procedures, technical policies, and relevant legislation.
  • Contributing to service excellence by reviewing outcomes, gathering feedback, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

This role is ideal for a technically skilled professional who is passionate about supporting student learning, safety, and quality outcomes in a clinical education environment.

WHAT YOU CAN BRING TO THE ROLE

  • Demonstrated experience working with clinical and simulation equipment relevant to health professional education and training, including preparation, operation, and troubleshooting.
  • A strong working knowledge of Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) legislation and the ability to apply safety principles effectively within a laboratory or clinical teaching environment.
  • Well‑developed analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to manage shifting priorities, meet competing deadlines, and take proactive corrective action when required.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, enabling you to deliver customer‑focused service and build positive working relationships with staff and students.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team in a high‑volume, fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong computer and data entry skills, including experience using the Microsoft Office suite, with the flexibility and attention to detail required to quickly adapt to new systems and software applications.

Special Conditions

It is a requirement of this position to hold:

  • Current First Aid Certificate;
  • Current C’ Class Queensland drivers license;
  • Working with Children Blue Card, and
  • The ability and willingness to meet manual handling demands.
