Laboratory Research Manager (Full-Time/Contractual C2)

This is a FULL-TIME, CONTRACTUAL C2 position

The University of Maryland, Baltimore's (UMB) Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science (PTRS) within the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) has an exciting opportunity for a contractual Manager, Laboratory Research. The Laboratory Research Manager is responsible for the daily operations of the lab and will develop and achieve broadly stated goals and objectives in alignment with the lab's strategy.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Responsible for managing the operations of a single or multiple research laboratory(s) and provide administrative and technical support to the research activities. This position is responsible for ensuring design, development, documentation and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities. Contribute to creation of new laboratory or expansion of existing laboratory(s).
  • Manage laboratory staff including training, scheduling, coordinating and delegating work, monitoring and evaluating performance to promote maximum staff member benefit and effectiveness as well as overall functional productivity.
  • Manage the development and execution of research studies. Revises studies, in consultation with upper management or principal investigator, to meet changing needs and requirements and enforces standards.
  • Manage laboratory operations including the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies. Identify and address issues and deficiencies and implement effective solutions.
  • May perform laboratory maintenance and laboratory research activities required by the study(s).
  • May assemble and assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication.
  • Provide for establishment or development of laboratory by evaluating equipment or machinery to be ordered, planning interactions with IT systems, and drafting Standard Operating Procedures for using new equipment.
  • Foster and support a conducive consultant/client environment, providing business unit and campus representatives with assessment, training, and advisement in research area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, agriculture, veterinary science, biochemistry, chemistry, or field of study related to the research of the laboratory. PhD and/or post doctoral training preferred.

Experience: Six (6) years of experience working in a research laboratory setting, including four (4) years in the relevant research specialization.

Preferred Experience: history of successful grant funding, experience with rodent models (rats and mice), utilization of transgenic mouse models, experience in preclinical neuroimmunology and neurotrauma (neuroimmunology, neurotrauma, and stress).

Supervisory Experience: Two (2) years of direct supervision or responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of others.

Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

HIRING RANGE: $93,000 - $95,000 per year (Commensurate with education and experience)
