Laboratory Technician
Job Summary
The Department of Surgery Research Laboratory is seeking a full-time laboratory technician to join our multidisciplinary team engaged in translational, wet bench, and animal-based studies. This position is responsible for conducting experiments, collecting and reporting data, and supporting the day-to-day operations of the laboratory.

Responsibilities
Experiments (50% Time):
• Perform wet bench and animal-based experiments in support of investigator-led research
• Execute established protocols and assist in developing new experimental procedures
• Collect, analyze, and summarize experimental data
• Assist with specimen processing, including tissue and biological sample handling
Record Keeping (20% Time):
• Maintain accurate and organized laboratory records, including experimental data and protocols
• Summarize and report experimental results
• Ensure documentation meets regulatory and compliance requirements
• Assist with data management and organization of shared lab resources
General Laboratory (30% Time):
• Maintain laboratory organization, cleanliness, and equipment functionality
• Order supplies, manage inventory, and track reagent usage
• Ensure compliance with institutional policies and safety regulations (e.g., IACUC, biosafety)
• Support overall lab operations and assist investigators, trainees, and staff as needed
Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:
Laboratory Technician, I: Requires little to no related experience.
Laboratory Technician, II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience.
Laboratory Technician, III: Requires 3+ years of related experience.
Laboratory Technician, IV: Requires 5+ years of related experience.
Preferences
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience (one year of education may be substituted for two years of related work experience). Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are required. Required Skills and Work Expectations:
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to reproducibility in experimental work
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative research team
• Strong communication and time-management skills
• Compliance with institutional training requirements, including animal care and use (IACUC), biosafety, and laboratory safety; willingness to complete required certifications upon hire
