Job Duties

The Law Enforcement Officer is responsible for protecting life and property, enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and upholding the regulations of the University within the appropriate jurisdictional confines. This position conducts campus patrols, investigates complaints and suspicious activity, responds to crime and traffic accidents, makes arrests, and issues citations. The officer will also provide court testimony, prepare written reports, and operate police communications equipment as required.

We are seeking candidates who can begin employment May 25, 2026 in preparation for the Law Enforcement Academy beginning July 1, 2026.

All candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation, which includes:

• Psychological evaluation
• Physical examination

Continued employment is contingent upon successful compliance with mandatory training standards of the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.

An applicant selected for this position and is currently employed by a Virginia State agency must complete a new probationary period.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must have the ability to obtain certification as a Campus Police Officer as mandated by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).
• Must have the ability to gain a working knowledge of civil and criminal law, law enforcement functions and basic safety practices/procedures, and the judicial system by attending a DCJS Certified Police Academy.
• Must have the ability to gain the knowledge necessary to apply and interpret laws, rules, or regulations; work independently and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; prepare comprehensive reports; conduct investigations or other research; and resolve problems.
• Must have the ability to function mentally and physically under stress and in emergencies.
• Must have the ability to develop skills to handle firearms and operate a motor vehicle safely.
• Required to have a valid Virginia Driver’s License.
• Must never have been convicted of a felony or crime of moral turpitude.
• Required to have a High School diploma or GED.
• Must be a US citizen.

Additional Considerations

• Background in corrections/jailor preferred.
• Prior police experience is not required, but understanding basic law enforcement concepts is preferred.
