Lead Locksmith
Position Summary
San Diego State University is seeking a skilled and experienced Lead Locksmith to oversee daily locksmith operations, provide technical expertise in access control systems, and ensure the security and functionality of campus facilities. This role combines leadership, hands-on maintenance, and coordination across departments to support safe and efficient campus operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance, Repair & Preventive Maintenance
- Perform installation, repair, and preventive maintenance of locks, door hardware, and access systems.
- Troubleshoot system failures, ensure compliance with ADA and safety codes, and address wear or deficiencies.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance schedules and document work in CMMS systems.
- Inspect systems to identify risks and ensure long-term reliability of campus access infrastructure.
- Lead Work Direction & Coordination
- Provide daily direction to locksmith staff; plan, prioritize, and assign work activities.
- Monitor work progress and inspect completed work to ensure quality, safety, and compliance.
- Coordinate workflows with other trades and campus departments to support projects and operations.
- Provide input on staff performance, training needs, and operational improvements.
- Technical Leadership & Key Program Support
- Serve as subject matter expert on locks, door hardware, and access control systems.
- Support implementation and maintenance of the campus master key system and key control procedures.
- Maintain key records, hierarchy, and compliance with security standards.
- Advise stakeholders on hardware selection, access strategies, and coordinate with University Police.
- Installation, Emergency Response & Shop Operations
- Install and modify locking systems for renovations and upgrades; interpret plans, specifications, and work orders to complete projects accurately.
- Respond to lockouts, urgent repairs, and security issues; perform emergency rekeying and implement temporary access solutions.
- Cut, issue, and track keys while maintaining accurate key control records and system integrity.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and inventory; ensure a safe, clean shop environment and support other Facilities units and campus projects as needed.

Position Information
- This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
- This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
- The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

SDSU Facilities Services is a customer service-based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Education and Experience
These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a locksmith's apprenticeship program.
In addition to the experience required above, the abilities of a Lead Locksmith normally would be acquired through two or more years of experience as a journey-level locksmith that included lead work coordination responsibilities and training in master key systems.
Key Qualifications
- Thorough knowledge of locksmith trade methods, materials, tools, and equipment, including proper use and maintenance
- Expertise in locks, locking systems, door hardware, fastening devices, and electronic access control systems
- Understanding of applicable regulations and codes, including ADA, fire/life safety, door hardware standards, and Cal/OSHA and Federal OSHA requirements
- Skill in estimating materials and labor for maintenance and installation projects
- Experience implementing preventative maintenance programs and maintaining accurate records using CMMS and key tracking systems
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to respond effectively to routine and emergency service needs
- Effective communication skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Experience working with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), key management software, and electronic access control systems (preferred)
- Prior experience in a similar higher education environment or a large multi-building facilities environment (preferred)
Licenses/Certifications Required
- Valid California Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
