Job Description:
I. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Facilities Management department supports the administration, faculty, staff and students in the quality planning and development of facilities projects that support our mission. Our talented staff of approximately 140 FTEs (Cleaning, Mechanical Trades, Central Heating Plant, Grounds, Paint, Carpentry, Stockroom, EH&S, Fleet Services, and Mail Services) are responsible for more than 2,000,000 SF of property in over 60+ major buildings and for maintaining more than 300 acres.
The Lead responsibilities in this position include: organize, prioritize, and schedule daily work; respond to the College's landscaping needs, during normal working hours and on overtime-including "call-ins"; supply material and tools available to others assigned to the Grounds Shop so they can accomplish the work expected of them; and input data into the computerized work order system to record time and work order information. Keep the supervisor informed regarding the pace of work and any concerns that should properly be brought to the attention of the supervisor. Additionally, in the absence of the supervisor respond to the operational needs of the Grounds Shop.
II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform general care and maintenance of the campus landscape, with a focus on overall tree health and identifying hazardous tree conditions.
- Carry out routine groundskeeping tasks, including planting, pruning, pest control, and maintenance of campus and athletic field turf.
- Assist with snow removal during the winter season to ensure safe and accessible walkways and roads.
- Maintain roads, walkways, driveways, and other hardscaped areas throughout campus.
- Perform floor maintenance and assist with moving materials and equipment across campus as needed.
- Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Work outdoors in all seasons and under various weather conditions.
- Lift, carry, and move heavy materials and equipment as required.
- Be available for emergency call-ins and willing to adjust work hours based on operational needs.
- Work overtime during peak periods and as necessary to support campus operations.
- Demonstrate flexibility in performing other duties as assigned to support the department and college community.
III. SKILLS/ KNOWLEDGE/ CERTIFICATIONS:
1. Required
- Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience in the landscape or groundskeeping field.
- Tier 2 skills required, including:
○ Plant identification and management
○ Pesticide application
○ Experience operating heavy equipment - Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet all credentialing requirements.
2. Preferred
- Genie Lift Certification preferred.
- Hoisting License preferred.
- Strong knowledge of plant materials, synthetic turf fields, soil fertility, and common grass/turf issues.
- Possession of a Pesticide License, Hoisting License, and/or a two-year degree in Horticulture or a related field — or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience operating snow plows, loaders, irrigation systems, and chainsaws.
- Working knowledge of vehicle maintenance and equipment repair.

VI. EDUCATION:
Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
VII. PHYSICAL/ MENTAL/ WORK ENVIRONMENT DEMANDS:
- Regular handling of hazardous materials, including cleaning chemicals and supplies.
- Exposure to potential environmental hazards such as chemicals, fumes, wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and extreme heat or cold.
- Occasional work at heights or in precarious locations.
- Work environments may sometimes involve loud noise levels.
- Physical activities include: balancing, carrying, pushing/pulling, grasping, repetitive motion, standing, bending, reaching, sitting, twisting, and lifting.
- Must be able to physically perform manual tasks, including climbing stairs and ladders, bending, and lifting.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and to stoop or remain standing for extended periods of time.
