Learning Disabilities Specialist/Transition - Project Forward - Cape Cod Community College
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Forward is a well-known certificate program providing vocational work experience for students with intellectual challenges who have participated in specialized high school programs. The students attending Project Forward benefit from transitional vocational instruction in preparation for the workforce. Small class instruction is offered in Agriculture/Facilities, Childcare, Elder Health and Wellness, Hospitality/Culinary Arts, Mass Communications and Broadcasting and Retail Operations. The Learning Disability Specialist will act as a member of the administrative team and engage in admissions, community outreach, supervision of assistants and professional development, as well as serve as the primary liaison between students and parents. This is a full-time (37.5 hours/week) 10-month position (based on academic year) with part-time hours (8-16) during the summer months.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Process and organize student applications for admission and interview students with the program director to determine appropriateness for admission.
- Provide direct service for first year students as an advisor and mentor.
- Meet with students to provide guidance and support when social/emotional needs are interrupting their ability to focus.
- Identify inclusive opportunities for Comprehensive Transition Program (CTP) students such as mainstream classes, Best Buddies/clubs, and college events.
- Provide professional development for instructors and assistants on learning modalities, assessment, behavior management and other skill areas, as needed.
- Consult with instructors and assistants to offer advice on behavior management, instructional accommodations, and differentiated instruction to meet the diversified needs of students.
- Coordinate meetings for and supervise classroom assistants and oversee student attendance.
- Collaborate with school district liaisons to support community-based students.
- Review scholarship applications, recommend recipients, and prepare notification to students.
- Assist with facilitation of staff meetings, informational sessions, professional development and special events.
- Instruct a seminar class or other duties when mutually agreed upon to support Project Forward students.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree in special education, rehabilitation counseling, psychology, social work or related field.
- Specialized training in learning disabilities, intellectual developmental disabilities and cognitive assessments.
- Five years of demonstrated experience working with adults or postsecondary students with intellectual, developmental, learning and/or social challenges.
- Knowledge of laws and regulations related to disability services and accommodations (e.g., ADA, Section 504) and IDEA transition principles.
- Ability to assess and interpret learning needs and recommend strategies for differentiated learning.
- Unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Doctoral degree or Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Special Education or related field.
- State or national certification in special education, psychology, or social work.
- Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) differentiated instruction and transition planning.
- Supervisory experience in special education or related discipline.

Additional Information
COMPENSATION: Full-time (37.5 hours/week), 10-month MCCC Unit Position; Grade 6 Learning Disabilities Specialist - Transition, with an anticipated annual salary range of $76,153-90,535. Actual salary will be consistent with the MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Includes participation in a comprehensive employee benefits program including option for membership in the Massachusetts State Employees' Retirement System.
