Lecturer and Assistant Band Director
Primary Purpose of the Organization
The band is housed within the Department of the Performing and Fine Arts, as an academic unit working with the NASAM accredited music program. The band program consists of multiple ensembles such as the symphonic band, marching band, and pep band, each offering unique opportunities for students. With the university's mission as a foundation, a comprehensive band program will be "dedicated to the promotion of learning, building of character and preparation of promising students for positions of leadership and service." The band program's ensembles are cornerstones resting on that foundation and must operate at "the highest quality" performing at university, athletic, community events.
Concert Band
is open to all students, faculty, and community with interest and experience. It meets flexibly responding to students' interests and abilities while performing a wide and diverse literature.
Symphonic Band
maintains an active performance schedule on campus and in the community. The Symphonic Band often represents the Department of Music at commencement exercises, convocations and other events. Membership is open to all university students by audition and is offered fall and spring semesters.
Pep Band
is a 30 plus-member basketball pep band and spirit group. The band performs at men's and women's home games, NCAA tournaments and selected activities.
Marching Band "Bronco Express"
is a marching band of approximately 100 students that performs at all home football games and traditionally travels to three to six out-of-town games during the football season. The marching band is a central feature of the University with many performances outside of football with audiences of over 5,000.
Primary Purpose of the Position
This a 50/50 position where the faculty member would be expected to teach 6 credits of Music or Humanities courses each semester, (totaling 12 per year) and assists in day to day management of the Fayetteville State Bands. Teaching areas include, but not limited to, Music Appreciation, Music Theory, applied private instruction, Choir, Vocal Ensembles, and other courses based on credentials.
Performance responsibilities include student recitals, concerts and musical support for theatre productions. The instructor will be responsible for the development and documentation of instructional outcomes; will provide a positive learning environment; will maintain and enhance teaching and learning excellence through ongoing professional development; recruit students for the music program and will maintain student success and retention through academic advisement.
In addition to the Lecturing requirement, this position will assist the Director of Bands with coordination of all aspects of the University Band program and ensembles (marching band, pep band, concert band, symphonic band, and wind symphony) in rehearsals and field instructions. The position will also assist with student recruitment, arranging, conducting students and consistent communication of band conduct standards to all band members.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
- This position requires a Master's degree in Music or a related field and
- Demonstrated musical ability as a conductor of marching, concert, and pep bands. Successful teaching and conducting experience at the secondary or collegiate level is required.
